When you talk of 'the beauty of the North', I just cannot resist my fond memories of Mae Faa Luang Garden somewhere close to Chiangrai. It's such a lovely place.

The artificial cries of cicadas and the drizzle at the entrance are so naturally simulated that even those Thais accompanying me could not initially know they were artificial, I at once knew it though.

This picture has got to be one of the most beautiful and inspiring. I plan to take my sweetheart to a place like this if we get a chance to vacation to gether.

When we were in Hua Hin last year we motorbiked miles out of town to visit one of the king's sufficiency economy projects, a showcase with certain ratios of pond to rice growing to housing to fruit trees, etc. It was well worth the visit even tho it's easy to get lost on the country roads.

the Royal project on Doi Inthanon is on the itinerary of all one-day van trips to Doi Inthanon, besides the waterfalls, show village and the summit. people get to spend about an hour. not enough, but more than nothing. there isn't a lot you can squeeze into a day.

Can't recommend a visit to a project high enough-you do see some real life there, rather than some workshops or a "show" hilltribe village.
I went with a coach tour once and once the guides had handed us over to the project guide, the former busied themselves buying huge amounts of produce. So prized is the quality of the food produced that they had orders from friends and neighbours to fill. You also see small queues of cars from the city on a family day out at weekends come to look at the project and buy food. Projects are probably one of the few places in the world where you can buy organic honey in a re-cycled Whisky bottle! All tis is before you get to see what they can do without heated glass houses and expensive fertiliser.
Don't miss the opportunity to visit if you can.
