all kids from primary 1 have one lesson per week called "health education". I am just totally unsure what is going on in those classes if the school continues to sell fried food, which the kids gobble up, and then bounce around like crazy, for a start. yes, sure, I know - they learn about healthy food and take tests on it, that's P1.
HIV prevention / sex education, and anything concerning drugs is totally off limits in our secondary section, I was told. I don't know if this is the same everywhere. there should be a national curriculum and it should not be up to schools whether they would like to protect their children or not.
instead of solutions, sticking heads into the sand is one of the greatest problems in Thailand, and getting this attitude sorted is the biggest challenge.
hope your students stay safe. I guess mine will be ok as they are only 6, but you never know.

You forgot to mention that it happens that some police offers later sell the confiscated drugs and so make a great deal of money and are relatively safe because they can "arrest" anyone for that crime that deals with them...

An interesting read for sure. I never really knew how it worked before. Scary to know there are so many drug dealers out there.

Thanks for your comments.

@Brian - Gor is very much alive and well. He was one of the lucky ones as he had a job waiting for him on the outside. He is now busy working on websites for Paknam Web.

Dear Richard,

I was wondering if you would give approval for your article to be shown on the Foreignprisoners.com website with a link back to your blog?

Your article is very informative.

@Kay Danes - Can we wait until I finish this series of articles? There will be three sides to the story: drug dealer, drug addict and inside prison. I might need to review this one before it is finally posted on our www.thaiprisonlife.com site.

Thanks for the interest..

Interesting post, Richard. There is a solution to this problem: Legalize and regulate all drugs in the same way we regulate the drug known as alcohol. Need evidence that this works? Read up on Portugal.

For more on this subject, let me recommend the LEAP (Law Enforcement Against Prohibition) website at:

http://www.leap.cc/cms/index.php

LEAP is an international organization. Such organizations are working to restore the civil liberties that have been stripped from citizens during this long period of "Drug War" madness.

I strongly disagree with that last comment. If you take a look at Portugal now you would see that they aren't doing too well...
