Very interesting article. From my limited relationships with Thai women, they are definitely a lot stronger than the perception. I wasn't the one wearing the trousers.

I think I used to live on the same road as you in BKK before I moved to Sydney. It's a small world!

Thank you for your great article. I came to Thailand on the superhighway, i.e. the "Siam Smile" route and have been happily married "unregistered" for 5 years. She was educated, english speaking and almost 25. I was divorced and 39. We had the same experience you described. My friends and coworkers (some of whom came to Thailand via the backpacker and/or bar girl circuit) find it hard to understand how my wife and I met. They assumes that the FULL SERVICE method is the only way to find a Thai Bride. In fact my wife had a good job and could have had anybody she wanted...I know because the first year there were endless phone call from Thai suiters (many of them older men who worked in her company...yuck)

I think society is one major reason Thais use internet dating sites (particularly outside of Bangkok). Often there are only limited ways to meet new people -through friends and work - whereas the internet offers near limitless potential.

After my wife and I watch the Louis T series (which we thought was funny and insightful into one side of farang-Thai 'relationships') she made a dummy profile on 'Siam Smile' so we could look out of curiosity. Typing in our town's name brought up a near encyclopaedic list of women in our area: all looking for partners because they can't find them ordinarily.

I think even on the Full Service sites, the girls are no mugs. Louis pulls of a few dirty tricks to make them look that way with editing, context and interveiwing them in English so they can't give complex answers. even then you can see through this with an educated eye.

The interview I did with a factory worker in the Lazy Thais piece shows just how intelligent these girls are when they can express themselves.

Great unbiased review of the Thai online dating sites. I love how you changed your opinion from one of cynicism to one of agreement.

If they don't go to find problems with the foreign brides, it doesn't make good television. Just imagine how boring it would be for them to say: "These Thai girls are just like the girls in your country and when they get married to foreign men, there's a good chance that they will be happy" Yawn
