is there much water in the Maekhong? last time I went - years ago - it was fine white sand about 80% of the distance to the Thai side. thousands of people were swimming, playing football, etc after sunset. that was my favourite about Vientiane.

Great report. "I advise therefore, to sod taking the bus to Nong Khai and instead a train which arrives after daybreak."

Probably good advice IF the train runs as planned. However, my one and only experience with Thai trains was three years ago on the same trip. On the journey from Hua Lompong station to Nong Khai the train was nearly three hours late, arriving after 9am (for no apparent reason other than slowness). On the way back it broke down overnight and arrived in Bangkok five hours later than scheduled!

Hee hee... arriving in Nong Khai at 9am by train is still probably a better than at 5am by bus! Agreed with you there Leosia, taking a train is extremely risky if you dont want to be more than an hour late.

Honestly I love the visarun to Laos. Its fun everytime and I dont think that 4200 Baht all inclusive is so much money and overpriced.
The Minivans are comfortable, airconditioned, no tuktuk approaches, you watch movies and you dont have to take care of anything at all.
For me it is a weekendtrip that I enjoy a lot and dont want to be annoyed by all the traps a single travelling foreigner will be used to.

We drove from Udon to the duty free area over at the Lao side and loved it. Bought quite a lot of DVDs. Cool!!!

I will be visiting some friends in Khom Kaen in Feb and coming from Australia I will be arriving on "visa exemption"(30 days)
1/ If I go across to Laos will my Thai visa be cancelled out? and have to get a new 30 day visa for Thailand before coming back to Thailand?
2/ I have heard some time back that a farang can only stay 90 days out of 180 days now, and then has to be out of Thailand for for 3 months. OR has it gone back the old "visa run" days.
3/ On ThaiVisa.com I read that a lot of foreigners were disgusted with the new rules and set out for Cambodia. Any feedback on this?

Perry: Your visa exemption '30 days' will be cancelled out once you cross the border into Laos. If returning to Thailand by land you will only get a 15 days entry stamp (compared to 30 if flying in). It's recommended then to get yourself a Thai tourist visa in Vientiane (Free at the moment). The embassy is also issuing double entry Tourist Visas at the moment (Also free). That 90 days out of 180 you mentioned has been scrapped. The only crackdown at the moment is on continuous Tourists visas. Hope that helps.

Hi Stephen; my last trip to Vientienne I received what I asked for ie; 60 day DEntry but was given a red stamp that basically says that under a Tourist Visa, I have been in the Kingdom (8) times & that next time (which comes up Feb. 22/10) they MAY NOT accept the app.

I am 73 & DO NOT WORK IN THAILAND. I am a retired Cdn citizen whose family lives in BKK( I have been here in Chiangmai for approx 5 years and got hit bad in 04/26 Tsunami while taking a TEFL coursae in Phuket Town./

Bottom line; should I spend 10,000 B to fly to Vientienne or besides Retireme nt Visa alternative (insufficient Baht)or is there an alternative? I understand that the visa is free till end of March so should I give my paperwork/documentation to one of the local who hang out across the road and pay hime 2,000B and cross my fingers?
Sincerely, John Macdonald EH!

John: As mentioned above in my last comment, there has been a bit of a crackdown on continual application of Tourist Visas. If you got insufficient funds for a Retirement Visa? Why not, if you have family, go for at least a basic Non-O. There are no limits on the number of these continually issued. A 3 month single entry in Vientiane goes for 2,000 baht a pop. No evidence of funds required, just a marriage certificate.

Many years ago, i ended up on a serious over-stay after using the 'services' of an agent, so not recommended - stamp could be fake. Good luck.

The great thing with the train is that you can have a beer and walk outside and get some air. the carriages are a bit like the old fashioned ones great for taking photos of thai countryside. you go through mainly open contryside unlike the bus were all you see is towns and cars. I found the train to be very relaxing and plus you could get plenty of food from the various hawkers. price wise the trip cost me 500 baht for 1st class ticket from nong khai to bkk. trip took about 11 hours.

hello Stephen,
I just readed your good story about your recently trip to Laos. we stay now already since september 2009 in Thailand and on the 24 th our 3 entry tourist visa will finish. We went for a stamp end october 09 en end december 09 to Messai, that was easy because we live in Chiang Mai We now have to go then to a thai consulate in another country, And we are thinking about Laos, Vietiane. I heard that it most be possible to get a 2 entry tourist visa again after our stay since almost 6 months. Then we have another 4 month stay here. Do you know if thats possible or they only give you a 1 entry visa. But then we have to make every two months that long journey.
Do you know what the price is for a touristvisa or is it still free.
And finally, you say you paid 36 British Pounds for just the visa for Laos. Thats quite expensive, isn't?
I hope you can give us some information about it if you like. Thanks already for that. greetz,
Jos
