Richard has a perceptive most insight into the way to engage in a country. He is worth twenty guidebooks. After reading his "column" and seeing his pictures I am always inspired to get out and "do it".

I watched your video on the race...ha ha, the sound of the loudspeaker can't be mistaken. It has to be Thailand. Seems like 3 people were speaking all at once with the thing cranked up full bore. They all sound the same to me whether they try to sell stuff down the soi or used in festivals.

How long was the distance? Did they race against the clock, two at a time? Or did they race against each other in rounds?

I also really appreciates these kinds of blogs that you do. I have learned far more about Thailand from thai-blogs than any guidebook or book about Thailand that I have bought.

The distance of the boat race was probably only 300 meters or so. There were qualifying rounds with two boats in each round. There was a draw at the start to see who raced against who.
