When I first started visiting Thailand, I found the Lonely Planet guidebook a valuable resource. I would still recommend it for novice tourists.
I still find it valuable, but for different reasons. Now, if I am visiting somewhere new, I first check the Lonely Planet. If it's in the book,I expect to see possibly hordes of tourists, if it's not, I may expect a more authentic local experience.

I guess with the popularity of modern technologies such as Iphones getting cheaper and slimmer, printed versions of the lonely planet may eventual go the way of photographic film for travelers, with travelers preferring the electronic versions downloaded or using international roaming to explore the Internet. That way there will be no need for a thick guide book in your pocket,

Lonely Planet already do something like this where you can buy and download any chapter you like in the guidebook for a few dollars. I guess it is only one step from this to add information that was cut out from the printed version when they ran out of space.

I was on the road for about seven months and for sure the lonley planet guide helped me out on several occasions. I love the run down of places to stay, having those little discriptions really helps narrow down the choices for accommodation. I'm headed back to Thailand in a couple weeks and just picked up Rough Guides, Southeast Asia on a budget. What do you think about the Rough Guides books?
