When I lived in Thailand I did my visa runs to Penang simply for the food. The Indian food in Thailand I never found up to scratch but in Penang it is world class, simply the best food anywhere anywhere in SE Asia.

How odd! Last Thursday night I watched "Rick Stein's Far Eastern Odyssey"-his new TV series-he has been to Cambodia & Thailand so far- this week he was in Malaysia-Penang included -I usually watch such more for the travel ideas/scenery than the grub-but like Steve I love a good "Ruby" ("Ruby Murray" (British 1950's popular singer)-rhyming slang for Curry) and got more interested in what the seemingly insatiable Mr Stein was eating than the scenery- he seemed never to stop eating!
Watch the series if you can-its good.

Anyway, Friday I bump into someone I have not seen for over a year in the street. He tells me a mutual friend is back in the UK on a visit from Malaysia-went out there as teacher in 1979-married locally etc
Today I get an e-mail from said friend-going to London tonight to see relatives and then back to Malaysia-sorry to have missed etc-why don't I think of coming out to PENANG to visit soon?!!
I am tempted!

Penang Island also known as "Pearl of the Orient" was listed last July in the UNESCO World Heritage.
Was one of the British Straits Settlement state apart from Malacca and Singapore.
A multiracial society with the Chinese Hokkiens as majority populace.
Visa run:Paul you're right, not only 'farang' do it,I've noticed a lot girls especially from neighbouring Thailand are part of the que having to fork out about RM500(Baht4,760) for re-entry(negotiable)enroute from Hatyai.
Having Roti Canai at Mamak(Indian muslim)restoran(24 hours open) is Malaysian most popular hangout verses western version. That glass of "teh(tea) tarik(pull) is a must.Next time around you'll notice that they don't just stir the milk tea but sometimes they do stunt by pulling it high between two small pot.Maybe you can request their performance for your camera.
Penang Assam(sour) Laksa is the most popular hawker food.Tangy mee in spicy gravy. This is slightly like the 'tom-yum' no 'khoon'stork. Here they use sardine fish(ikan kembong) or ikan(fish) parang(sword)-use for making fish ball type.Another recommendation is the Rojak--fruit salad,a must try! They are mixed with shrimp paste.
Indian curries are still the best.
For your info: Hatyai to Kuala Lumpur 24 seater VIP =Baht400 (9:30am daparture.19:00hrs arrival.)
Kuala Lumpur(K.L.) to Penang RM:35.00

My girlfriend cant even stand the smell of Indian Curry... I went to the Mamak Stall (Indian Muslim Stall) and ordered Roti Telur (Roti Canai + Egg), well, she ate it just like that and didnt even finish it... And asked me not to bring her to any Indian restaurant again... ^^

Wow, Penang....

I went there last July 09, it's magnificent. And don't you ever dare to forget to taste the delicious and fragrant Authentic Penang Char Kway Teow dish....

Phuket/Penang have an inseparable relationship and Straits Chinese on either island almost always have relatives or ancestry from either island. Do you?
