I'd like to comment, but every time I try I get a notice saying my comments are considered spam even though I have not mentioned any business names.

Steve. I think I have been talked into giving these guys extra money (the tourist badge round the neck guys) - but - they did take me through in minutes, and I had no wait, or need to offer extras to officials (but seems I was paying extra?). As a first timer, I had no idea where I was, or what I was doing!

I have to do this again soon, and will refer back to this post, so thanks again for the info.

I had to laugh -- I actually prefer the scam version, even though I know that's basically what it is. I pay a bit extra for "VIP" service, as they call it -- I cross the border, wait in a room with a fan while they do everything for me, and I'm back in Thailand in about 15 minutes every time, half an hour tops. When I've done it myself I end up getting bribe requests "visa stamp fee", "health notice fee" from multiple officers, they charge me 1000 baht for the visa anyway (officials tell you $20 is not accepted, despite it being posted on the signs -- seen backpackers get in big arguments over it), and it takes up to 3 hours. For an extra 10-15 bucks, I'll pay for the cost of convenience, shady though it may be. The helper guys are actually decent blokes who even teach me some Khmer while I wait.

I got stung badly on my second visa trip to Poipet. I knew i could do get the Cambodian visa by myself but fell to the tuk-tuk commands and i was dropped off at a visa specialists near the border market. I handed over 1,200 for the 'VIP' service and was told i would get my passport with visa intact in ten minutes and then i would be taken over the border by one of their guides.
I waited for almost an hour for my passport back and when i complained about wasting my time they threw my passport back at me on to the floor and said i needed to go across the border alone. They wouldn't give me the VIP service because i was someone who is impatient. I wasn't the only person who got stung that day there were about 5 or 6 of us altogether waiting and finally had to cross the border ourselves.

Basic rule: Never trust Tuk Tuk drivers. Tourist guidebooks tell you not to trust strangers starting a conversation with you. There are also signs warning for that in bangkok. Isnt a tuk tuk driver a complete stranger giving you advice you didnt ask for?
Never trust people who give you advice you didnt ask for

Yes, Ben (Thai Pirate) has just written a very recent personal account about being scammed 500 baht - excuse he didn't stay overnight in Cambodia. You have been warned. Click on link for the read.

Hi Steve. as a first timer I probably paid over the odds. The best deal was 800 baht return for aircon minbus with pickup from hotel.
To me it was probably worth the extra few hundred baht to have someone metaphorically hold my hand.
Forgot the two photos so forked out another 200 baht, presumably for someone to draw a smiley face on my application form!
