Thank you for the tips on photographing the Alms Round, Richard. Last time I tried this in Chiang Mai the nearest I got was seeing 2 monks knocking on the glass door of a local coffee house/cafe while it was still dark. And getting no reply. Previous enquiries at my hotel to the staff had produced no info whatsoever.
I spent over an hour and a half after that looking for monks, tables, etc, and saw nothing!

Khun Don, next time you are around, there is a 7-11 near Somphet Market (on Moon Muang road between Moon Muang soi 6-7), usually there are lots of stalls and quite a few monks, but they are all gone by 7:00 or 7:15.
or wait at a temple at sunrise and see which way the monks go :-)
also, on special days there is mass alms giving at Thapae Gate (not all full moons and new moons, but Buddhist holidays, father's day, mother's day, etc). it is very early as well and I never ever get up on a holiday to go and see.

I did my stalking in Chiang Mai back in November last year..... got a few shots by the bank of Mae Ping, somewhere near the flower market.

I suspect those monks hanging around a 7-11 on samlors or those knocking on people's doors are probably faked monks.

When I stay at Wat Bangtoey in Bangkok, I often go on alms round and carry the bags. It's a great way to get to know the local people. Unfortunately the air pollution on Thanon Nawamin is at its thickest just before dawn but you can't have everything can you? Maybe I will get to go on alms round in the country sometime and that will be just perfect.
