Thanks for this

All I can say, "let he is without sin wast the first stone",

For me this was the crunch and saved me reading more and getting angry, "who secretly signed over our historical heritage of Khao Phra Viharn to the Cambodians".

I guess some people are just not civilised or inteligent enough to accept a 'generally' accepted court ruling!

Sorry for any past negative comments, you guys do a great job!

Steve,

I hope there is a part 3. We really need to know what action plan that PAD in the event that PPP is brought down.

1. Change the constitution?
2. Change the political system to ensure Thaksin or his proxy will never ever win?
3. Change the electorate?
4. How does PAD propose to solve the current economic mess?

There is just too much politic going on in Thailand. It's time to get back to nation building. Vietnam will overtake Thailand as the big brother of Indochina in near future if Thai don't stop arguing and get back to work.

"Unlike the ‘know-nothing’ speakers at the UDD mob on Sanam Luang, the speakers for the PAD at Government House make the place a university. We call it ‘Interactive Learning Through Action’. There are professors, farmers, NGO’s, labor leaders, national artists and musicians. Sometimes the UDD are so impressed that they have to call in spies to see who we have on stage next."

A very elitist opinion - as I see it. Thanks for posting the interview Stephen.

I get the feeling that Ajarn really had to cringe when he added farmers to this group.

What...? PAD is about non-violence...Gandhian tactics...a real watchdog...give me a break.

At least the guy was honest enough to say that new politics will mean that the cronies and friends of the PAD leaders will get 70% appointed seats in the new government.

Sorry to say this interview did not do much other than to reveal the self-serving propaganda of a holier-than-thou organisation, with connections to....?

Another good installment from PAD fantasy land! This interview does more to expose the hypocrisy of the PAD than the Bangkok Post could ever achieve.

As a leading member of the PAD, I don't know if Ajarn Nimit Somboonwit actually knows he's lying or if he actually believes what he says. For example his comments about Khao Phra Vihar, which is not Thai according to an international ruling which Thailand never contested. His comments about corruption! I mean how much are they paying the PAD protesters to sit in squalor in Government House and who is paying them? Similarly, "this path of non-violence and civil obedience". Does he have a problem with the meaning of words? Guns, knives, ping-pong explosives, stabbing police with iron rods, punching women in the face - so that's non-violence right?

Incidentally, I don't think the Government are doing a good job either but at least they don't go around attacking people with the wrong color shirt and proposing that if you're poor and stupid then you can "participate" but not vote.

The PAD should be lynched.

The words of a self-righteous man. Sound like a fanatic if you ask me. Reminds me of the time when I attended Anthony Robbin's seminar with 3,000 attendants, and he says "the mind is a powerful thing. If you think you can do it, you can." Ya, I think he is right. If you keep convincing yourself long enough, one day you'll believe Thai politics used to be clean until Thaksin and gang took over and it was them who corrupted the whole country and stole the innocence of Thai people. Also, Thaksin and gang worship Satan. If Thaksin is still here, he will steal your daughters and sell them to prostitutions. LOL

Ajarn Nimit, after chatting today, would like to emphasize that the 70:30 of political office holders to be 'appointed' has only been a possibility of what the PAD's New Politics may have to offer. The 70:30 has only been 'an example' of what could be offered. Ajarn, ater reading some of the comments in both parts one and two, may take the opportunity to answer as critics as possible in a forth coming part three. In the meantime, Ajarn as President of Suphanburi Civil Movement, as well as being a spokesman for the province's PAD, would like you to check out his blog as above.

Comment from: (PollWatch) Open Forum for Democracy Foundation
The PAD's fight is against Thaksin's cronyism, which has been inherited by the Somchai Wongsawat administration _ as was the case with its predecessor Samak Sundaravej's government, and which will be the case with its potential successor, the Puea Thai party, among whose members are the 101 executive directors of the disbanded Thai Rak Thai party who are forbidden by the Constitution Court from playing politics.

Instead of falling for Thaksin's self-serving letters to ''Friends in the International Media'', foreign journalists and observers should question how banned politicians are actively manoeuvring the political scenario to provoke violent confrontation at all costs.

Financially speaking, Thaksin is not known to care about the costs involved in promoting his political agenda. The Nov 1 phone-in simply showcased yet another self-serving slick talk by Thaksin which hooked the international media into propagating further his ''apparent popularity'', without giving deserving importance to the fact that he has transgressed the due process of law and is now urging the masses to ''help bring me home''.

The Open Forum for Democracy Foundation would like to express its view on the current political stand-off among various parties, directed in particular at the ''armchair critics'' who do not have adequate information.

Before more is said by those with loose tongues and pens, those who have a distaste for the PAD for its objectionable on-air language and the ''undemocratic'' occupation of Government House should at least explore why thousands of educated and middle-class urbanites have been camping out there without being paid to do so for over five months.

Armchair critics should try to gain first-hand experience of the situation by joining a UDD rally site or the PAD at Government House, and compare the rhetoric and provocations witnessed at each venue. Better yet, one should take note of the profiles of the demonstrators and assess the on-site situation that is usually not reported in the media.

While we commend the PAD for its educational extension programme during the past five months in which demonstrators attend open ''university classes'' on politics, we abhor the tabloid-style twisting of facts to fire up the demonstrators to the point that Government House has been turned into an ''entertainment'' venue.

Nonetheless, we agree that even the least-educated demonstrators have learned a tremendous lot about Thai politics which should contribute to a more sophisticated pool of voters in future elections.

The majority of Thais who stay aloof are still very much misinformed by NBT and all state-concessioned radio and TV stations, not to mention those print media that have sold-out to an unlimited budget for advertising and paid-for columnists who churn out fabricated information.

No doubt many surveys always yield the same result that most respondents are irritated by the PAD demonstration and call for the government to get serious about reclaiming Government House. On the other hand, the PAD has only its ASTV satellite broadcast and the unreliable radio frequency 97.75 MHz, both paid for by the demonstrators and supporters inside and outside Thailand, to reach out to the world. It resembles the underground radio during the 1999 ethnic cleansing war against Albanian guerrillas in Kosovo.

Please note that we fully acknowledge the fact that many violent incidences have occured in the past five months, including the fatal one on Oct 7. However, our first-hand experience tells us that they were all unilateral attacks against the unarmed PAD demonstrators. We therefore call for dissolution of the Parliament to revamp the political landscape before the government, with its upper hand in the lower house and strong connections in the upper, succeed in amending the constitution to its own advantage.

Though we are worried about the resurrection of populist policies as a pretext to vote-buying in disguise, more disturbing is the coalition government's stance that supports the fugitive which foreshadows more violent conflict. Whether the people in red T-shirts from the North and Northeast were paid to attend the televised talk show in Bangkok is not an issue, but Thaksin's on-air appeal to back his challenge of the legitimacy of the judiciary that convicted him is unacceptable by any count.

The Open Forum for Democracy Foundation hereby rejects the validity of the government claim that it was elected by a landslide victory, because the massive popularity is predicated on vote-buying, as proven by the Election Commission. The Constitution Court shall hand down its verdict on dissolving the coalition parties soon.

Of course, the prolonged PAD protest has caused a nuisance to many quarters in society. On the other hand, we see it as a constitutional right for people to stage a peaceful demonstration in any modern democracy whenever the powers-that-be do not serve the interests of its citizens.

The UDD and government supporters also are entitled to their constitutional rights to do so as well, provided that it is open, peacefully and unarmed.
The case in point is that the current administration and its predecessors choose to yearn for the return of their ousted political master, a convicted criminal on the run, instead of seeking a true reconciliation, a prerequisite of which is to bring the fugitive to justice.

Hence, it is more than justifiable both democratically and even morally for the citizens to block the continuation of such a despotic tyranny, and the succession of its cronies. So long as it is carried out peacefully, it has our endorsement. Dialogue is hence a non-issue to us.

Thanks for all the comments. Sure, there is a lot more stuff to be answered - so may be something new soon. As for interviewing a UDD leader, i wouldn't mind. In fact, i've been searching around - got a couple of contacts, but nothing concrete yet.

Of course, a bit of balance would be excellent. Vice-versa, if i had originally done an interview with the UDD, comments would have read "Cleary, do you only hang around with anti-democratic corrupt tyrants like Thaksin and only give voice to his idiotic cronies?"

Taksin is a smart ass. Many years ago, he tricked most of Thai people that he was already rich so he wouldn't engage in any corruption. He was successful. Thai people gave him the chance to govern the country and forgave him for what he had lied about his assets.

Power and money are very addictive. Taksin then wants to get richer by abusing Thailand. Eventually, he wants to be the king.

I am so angry to see some of you still support Taksin. What PAD is doing is good for the country. For any of you who don't like PAD, please go to the government house and spend few hours there. Please.

Stephen, big thanks to you.

I support democracy not a bunch of crazies led by a nutjob media oligarch who think that the 'poor' don't understand what voting means.

PAD are not democrats in any shape or form. They want to return to some strange form of feudalism.

This doesn't mean I support Thaksin - he is quite clearly a corrupt, venal man who organised terrible human rights abuses. However, Thai politics and the elite is riddled with such people.

Simple facts emerge in this whole matter - why not build a political party that can challenge Thaksin/PPP? Something committed to the same social policies (healthcare, development etc) but that is more in tune with Thai cultural values? If you have better ideas that are more in tune with the people than TRT/PPP then you will win the election (and don't tell me TRT/PPP bought every victory - to win 3 landslides through buying is impossible and the international community might have noticed as well).

But to call for a coup or a 70% unelected parliament is completely undemocratic, hands the moral highground to Thaksin and reduces opposition to this corrupt human rights abuser to a bunch or bomb throwing, women punching, head cases.

Any functioning democracy would have thrown PAD straight out on their asses - they have no popular mandate and represent a narrow band of middle class Thais who seemingly hate the poor.

Why do the farangs think that western style democracy must be implenmented all over the world? Thailand and much of asia never had democracy in much of its history, so why do the farang like to impose their idea that only their's is the best? Thaksin and his cronies had made use of this same western style democracy for their own gains.

dubious george, it's so easy for you to say that and after a long period of political impasse, the situation is going nowhere.

Thailand needs its own form of government and not let westerners impose or dictate what style of government is right for us.

Wrong (Dubious George). You're so wrong.

PAD does NOT represent only middle-class people but everyone from every part of Thailand. Now at the Government House, you will see Thais, Chinese, Muslim, Farang, North, Isan, and South, everywhere.

= = = = EXAMPLE = = =

- There are free local food from all parts of the nation (never been a better place to try all kind of local foods).

- Every hour, free buses and vans from north to south are provided for anyone who want to come to join PAD.

- All Thai dialects are spoken from the organizers at the main stage.

- It is probably the first time in Thai history that you will see Millionaires cleaning the street, collecting garbage, and helping out.

- Every hour, lots of donation are given to PAD by all walks of life (from a guy with only one dirty 20-baht bill to a factory owner with half a million baht; from a dozen of Thai fried rice to a piece of land worth millions.).

What PAD is doing is purely democratic and very legal. Taksin's government, Samak's government, and the current one never listen to what PAD has asked for. That's why PAD has to take away the Government House since these government are criminal and no longer qualified as governments.

PAD will bring the new political system that is truly democratic and most definitely suitable to Thailand and Thai people.

2008-11-11 @ 16:49
Comment from: laughing george
How can a 70% unelected parliament be democratic?

Why is there no proper transparent auditing of donations given to PAD? Is this what the PAD would propose as effective governance?

Why was Sonthi once a big supporter of Thaksin and only fell out with him when Thaksin refused to bail him out of financial trouble?

PAD are neither democratic or legal.

PAD are violent thugs who physically attack anyone who dares to openly disagree with them.

Why don't PAD create a political party and stand for election?

PAD want a system of government suited only to the elite they represent.

Westerners didn't force democracy on Thailand. It was a result of a long struggle by Thai people that included massacres in 76 and 92 and the end of absolute monarchy in 32. To claim that Westerners want to force democracy down people's throats is a slur on the memory of all the people who died to achieve it.

The fact is that democracy, like any other system, is imperfect and needs to be struggled over. To do this requires high ideals. I certainly didn't like Thaksin but the PAD's 'politics' are a total and utter joke and if their ideas did really gain ground it would be an utter disaster for Thailand and would set the country back 50years.

As for other Asian democracies - why not ask the Taiwanese, the Koreans, the Japanese, people in Hong Kong, Phillipines, Indonesia etc etc whether their systems of government were imposed by Westerners.

The unavoidable truth is that democracy hands power to the masses - and for some reason a small slice of Thai society just can't understand that.

What PAD believe in is a form of quasi-fascism that would be roundly rejected by the majority of Thai people. That's because the majority understand and support democracy far more than the PAD thugs.

It is the oldest trick in the book, played by despots from Hitler to Mao to blame the failings of a society on outsiders.

Thailand is a sick, sick child right now - the PAD are but one nasty symptom.

And please don't confuse me with a Thaksin supporter. Both sides show how messed up your country is - corrupt business man versus nasty quasi-fascists. In some ways you deserve each other.

Maybe Thailand should shut its borders, kick out all the evil Westerners, make Sonthi ruler for life and use North Korea as its role model?

Taiwan, Japan, South Korea and the Philippines were American protectorates. Even so, the Americans were propping up dictatorships of some of these so called "democracies" because it protected American interests. (Note Marcos, Syngman Rhee, Chiang Kai Shek, Chiang Ching Kuo, Suharto et al). These were democracies but there were numerous problems associated with it.
China had never seen a democracy and it has kept its borders intact for much of its history, built wealth for its people and so forth. If a liberal government were to be in place, the country would disintegrate due to its various minorities.
So George, quoting a few countries that seem like democracies does not support your point that a western/liberal style democracy suits Asian people.

Ultimately i dont really give a monkeys what kind of government you have in thailand. It's your country and i have a nice safe civilised wealthy western democracy to call home. As for the other asian nations i mentioned you should ask their citizens whether they like/want democracy and not impose your view on them.

There's an old saying - if it acts like a duck, looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, chances are it is a duck.

and the PAD are anti-democratic, quasi fascist thugs who look, act and talk like anti-democratic quasi-fascist thugs.

now, as i have just pointed out, you're welcome to whatever political system you want but dont insult mine and everyone elses intelligence by pretending that the PAD are just nice peaceful liberals.

if - god forbid - you did take power i probably wouldnt come back to thailand until you'd been consigned to the dustbin of history along with all the other demagogues and dictators, thaksin included. I don't think i would be alone either as thailand would become burma mk II as you would need to kill a lot people to put your weird plans into practice as millions of thais (not farangs) have made it very clear they would aggressively oppose you. Businesses would pull out, tourism would stop and youd end up in the same place you are now. All i can say is good luck.

and one final thing - thailand is not china (which has had 60years of one party rule) - you are a small nation with a record of massacres, coups, appaling human rights, high levels of murder, some of the worst inequality on the planet, terrible numbers of road accidents and an entrenched corrupt elite who care only for themselves.

oh, and if the west hadn't supported thailand in 60s and 70s you'd likely have been communist by now.

furthermore if the west didnt trade with you or send you tourists youd likely be sitting in a hut without electricity having never had education or a job - the north koreans dont have democracy either...

but i get the feeling thats what PAD want - to drag thailand back 50years - a Thai year zero, without democracy, where happy illiterate peasants till their fields and never ask for anything.

"As for the other asian nations i mentioned you should ask their citizens whether they like/want democracy and not impose your view on them."

- 20 years ago, would the Indonesians have wanted anybody else other than Gen. Suharto? They kept him in power. Today, go to Moscow and ask the Russians if they want Vladimir Putin as President for Life, you'll get the answer. Go to Singapore and ask Singaporeans what they thing of Lee Kuan Yew. Armchair traveller farangs think they know it all !!!

"you're welcome to whatever political system you want but dont insult mine and everyone elses..."

- A pot shouldn't call a kettle black. You've insulted all of us in just about all your posts from the start.

"thailand is not china (which has had 60years of one party rule) - you are a small nation with a record of massacres, coups, appaling human rights, high levels of murder, some of the worst inequality on the planet, terrible numbers of road accidents and an entrenched corrupt elite who care only for themselves."

See, you farangs have a problem with tall poppy syndrome. Here in Asia we respect people with authority. We appreciate strong leaders who bring security and prosperity. We are not like the Australians and the British who resent their monarchy, their successful citizens....I rest my case.
And the West didn't send tourists to Thailand like what you stated, they weren't goaded to come here like Soviet vacationers holidaying in Eastern Europe; they came on their own accord! Just like you and other farangs who come here with their social security pension from their "wealthy western democratic country" as you put it plus their unwelcomed opinion on how our country ought to be run. You are welcome to bring your tourist dollars but leave your tall poppy syndrome and arrogance behind.

- Clearly your knowledge of Asian history is sketchy but probably non existent. China may have had a recent history of one party rule, but they have had 5000 years of ONE PERSON rule, even after the overthrow of the Manchus.

I believe most of us are concerned that there are no solutions in sight in this stand-off.

If the present government is brought down, there will also be chaos which none of us, farangs included, want to see.

Let me try to say a few words from an Asian neighbors' perspective.

Every Asian democracy has its own sets of problems. The main could be stamped from the lack of good understandings on how democracy works by the rural folks.

The Asian society has deep mindset based on Ruler-Subject relationship instead of Government-Citizen relationship. We choose the government that is supposed to serve the people. The Ruler-Subject relationship spawns warlords, village heads, and some rural tycoons who believe that they are the Rulers. Those under them also believe the so called rulers are born with the rights and that if they support the ruler, the ruler will take care of them, a sort of patronage system and neo-feudalism. The Subject submits to the Ruler and believe the Ruler know best. Having said that, we cannot blame the rural folks too as their immediate needs are food and shelter and not some abstract idea called "democracy" that cannot bring food to the table. This is how a smart or sly politician like Thaksin come into play.

The same if happening in Malaysia where I live. The ruling United Malay National Organization (UMNO) has been ruling Malaysia for past 50+ years. The parties are full of wardlords who receive land and business in return of patronage to support the Prime Minister. An UMNO division head directly choose the Prime minister as the UMNO president automatically become the PM. If you are a King maker, you will be handsomely rewarded. The PM is sometimes scared of the warlords. Recently there is one that build a "palace" in a state land without permit.

But things are changing as we could see the results of recently 8 March 2008 election where the ruling parties receive about 50% of total votes and are denied of 2/3 majority that allow them to change the constitutions. The electoral system is crafted in such a way to give weightage to ruler folks, 9,000 rural voters will elect one MP to 30,000 city voters for one. With advancement of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and educations, more rural folks will be influence by their children and understand better how democracy works. There are also few millions of new voters who reject the UMNO warlords. Thee are reasons why UMNO has lost its support.

In Singapore, the Peoples' Action Party headhunt the candidates for Member of Parliaments. If you are a corporate captain, a renown academics or a successful lawyer, you may be headhunted. So instead of serving said a bank, now you serve Singapore Incorporated, full time and with all the dedication.

I cannot offer any comment of how democracy should work in Thailand. I could only ask for blessing from Lord Buddha. May Thailand be prosperous and free.

Very interesting discussion here. Look, Thais think they know it all. They don't. Thais think they are the best. They are not - mostly poor, uneducated, import high technology, can't invent anything themselves. And now these elite wanna-be Thais think they know what is good for Thailand and form PAD. Farang, Japanese and other nations are way more smarter than Thais. And countries like China and Thailand are very poor, see their GDP per capita. Of course, Thais love getting insulted from simple statement of facts, like that 70% appointed officials is not a democracy. Thais can do what they want, but as long as they do what they do and how they do it, Thailand and China and other undemocratic countries will always be poor and weak. Of course, if Thais are given a democratic systems, people like Thaksin will abuse it. So the real solution is to change Thai corrupt, nasty, lying, cheating nature and become true Buddhists. Then, when Thais become more pure, only then will they be able to handle real democracy.

Appreciate what your got when you've got it.

Gosh john,~ do u think ur so pure?

ppl like you obvisouly only ursurp white news and what it regurgitates~ u seem to just love swallowing up shit. and it looks like uve mutated into a turd~

boo u~

with ur lack of mentality all that i can recommend to u, to escape ur inferiority is to go die in a lonely ditch somewhere where no one cares and then. only then. will u be able to *hopefully* be re born, reincarnated or whatever~ and maybe then god will grant u equal mentality like the rest of us~ lucky ones ~ hahahahahahahah

i wish u the best of luck~

but if u happen to drop dead somewhere near my estate then... umm... imma have to dig u out and bury u in a junk/rubbish yard. where u belong~ ^^

though i do agree with u that thai ppl need to stop being corrupt. but. seriously. u could have said it nicer.

LMAO reminds me of a low class retard. I know, because one of the companies I own services people with lesser mental capacities. First, LMAO criticized me, then he agrees with me. Full retard. I have more degrees from private universities than I can count on my hand, own several companies, and live in Thailand for many years. When I speak, man, I speak what it is. Sure, it offends folks, but hey, truth is always offensive. Nobody wants to hear or see facts. Most farangs are so happy in Thailand with their whores, and most Thais love Thailand so much they wouldn't dare to critized it, certainly not to farangs. Nobody cares about your estate, idiot, when u die, you can't take it with you. Thailand was always corrupt, and always will be. As Thais tell me: "Buddha does not pay your bills." I think that says it all about their values. Money and power are Thai primary values almost every time. Go read the news, Thai and foreign. Thailand is in a toilet now. I am not happy to see it. Wish it wasn't true, but here it is. And did you see how you type your statement? You wouldn't pass basic English in my Ivy League university. But I agree with you. I can be nicer. Hahaha to you. Brainless (lacks critical and analytical thinking).

PAD are lawless criminals no better than Thanksin. Nice to see some lawsuits may start agaisnt PAD swines for all the evil action they took. People died because of them. Tourists with children were stuck in Thailand in terrible crowded conditions. And government is too weak to do anything about it. Then again, Thailand was always weak. It never had the strenth to fight superior western powers, so it used diplomacy, gave up land, and so on to remain relatively independent. That weakness created inferiority complex. Didn't feel good, so Thais created a fake superiority complex to compensate for their true inferiority. Thus you get today's Thais - arrogant, proud, and of course, just as weak and truly inferior. Taking over the airport clearly shows inferiority of their strategy and thinking. It could have been done with class, but Thais have no class. PAD had the support of the people in the beginning, but now they are hated and viewed as terrorists, which is not far from the truth.
