24 flights an hour?! that must be their target or something. I would say there are about 24 flights a day to Bangkok, and maybe the same number to other places. (thanks for spotting that Betti, edited already - steve)

everyone I know who is trying to live off tourism is complaining recently. parents at school who run resorts or restaurants, the receptionist at my former place, a Thai guide I know....

I'm always wondering what the locals think when a small place like Vang Vieng or Pai is booming. it must bring in lots of cash but maybe they also want some of their old life back? I don't know.

I remember CM back in the eighties when it was a charming and friendly little city to be in-even in the late 1990's it was still good. You could cross roads easily, prices were reasonable and it was quiet.
Then there was the huge influx of people re-locating from Bangkok. Now it is noisy, you can't cross the roads,-no bridges like Bangkok- prices have risen greatly and thanks to the horrendous traffic, the air quality is poor.
All good reasons never to return and warn off your friends when you get back home!
It certainly is far too commercialised for hip back-packers now days! If allowed to run out of control as Chiang mai seems to have been, Pai will probably be the same in 10 years time.
As for the airport, to treble footfall it is going to have to expand-but where?
The alternative is a new airport. Is that likely to happen?
Probably not as it has been under discussion every so often for at least the last decade without any firm action or even resolutions.
Chiang Mai sadly has lost its way IMHO-I will not be going there again.
Unless the Thai authorities get a very firm grip on the unbridled and totally unplanned and inapropriate expansion of its popular tourism areas, then they are are going to lose far more visitors than they ever hope to gain.

The number of tourists coming to Pai last year was about nearly 200,000 people comprising of 50 % domestic and 50 % foreigners. For foreigners most are from Europe. Each year tourism in Pai is growing 10 to 20 percent.
