With the adults acting like this, no wonder the Thai youth think they can also run away from their problems. Someone needs to set a good example and it needs to start at the top. Vatana just got sentenced to ten years. He should now turn himself in and return from Cambodia.

I think you should have made a distinction between those who fled crimes and those who fled "crimes".

Pridi Banomyong is another example of those who fled "crimes". It is a real shame that people like Pridi and Puey, among others, have had to flee. Its strange to see a land/inheritance tax finally being put into place nearly 75 years after Pridi's attempt got him branded a "Communist" by the (landed) nobility. He also founded the Bank of Thailand and Thammasat University. Basically, he saw 75 years ago the things we still bemoan about today: economic inequality (especially from feudal practices), educational inequality (which we also bemoan today), distribution of power, and much more. See his wikipedia page in Thai.

Thanks ThaiDude. In fact, Pridi will be getting a mention in Part 2. I think it's already mentioned in each paragraph whether there was an actual crime committed. And sometimes, it's hard to decipher whether that person had committed an actual crime or not, as in the case of Yantra (apparantely impersonating a monk)

I am very impressed. Does anyone know what happened to Yuvahdhida now? I tried finding up new information about her on the internet but nothing comes up/ As for Ai Yantra at the time, i was only a kid but i can remember that my mom was real upset as she was one of his fans. Thanks.

According to Wikipedia Thai langauge, Plaek Phibulsongkram escaped to Cambodia. We now got three different version.

Phibulsongkram definitely did end up in Japan but according to my original source it was Penang he fled to initially. Yet, as Cream noted another version states he fled to over the Cambodian border by car first. On Wiki (Eng language) it notes that Phiibulsongkram (Wiki uses an awful spelling of Phibulsonggram) spent the rest of his life in Japan. Yet another source i have just been reading in Thai states that he also lived in America for a long while! This source also states that is wife La-iad was apparently in Switzerland at that she fled and had no prior knowledge to his escape-art. A few months later she caught up with him in Phnom Penh.

Whats with the postcard from Singapore? Did Yantra flee to Singapore and then send a postcard back to one of his fans? ;P

Rumours have it that Yantra was a fan of the Geylang area of Singapore and lectured there on a short-time basis.

Another monk who fled Thailand is the infamous abbot of Wat Phra Dhammakaya, after allegations of embezzlement.

Interesting article Steve. Some real characters in there, would also be interesting to know about any shady people making a new life in Thailand, such as that Russian arms dealer a while back, and the now infamous mr Paul Gadd (Gary Glitter). I know he was in Cambodia but everytime I saw him on the news it was somehow involving the Thais and their bad rep for dealing with this type of crime.

Great blog.

I'm hoping Thaksin will be returned home to face the music. There are certasinly a few shady characters in your list that Thaksin surely belongs with.

Can't wait for part two.

Hi. I'm casting around looking for anyone who knows what Yantra's situation is currently. I was at the monastery many years ago, and have since heard about an accident, manslaughter charges (in addition, of course, to the charges that made him flee Thailand), and now I can't find anything current online. If you had any info I'd be interested to hear it. Thanks very much.
