A very detailed and useful blog for drivers. I am sure there are enough tips and tricks to help first-time drivers in Thailand.

Excellent blog, Richard!

A fascinating and very useful blog, Richard.I am unlikely to drive myself in Thailand, however I will bookmark it for anyone that should ask me about driving in Thailand.

I always find road trips around Thailand to be a pleasant experience, although there are a few things to be aware of if contemplating driving in the country....
Many drivers do not have a license, so have never learnt to drive properly or have much regard for the road rules.
Speeding is common on highways, it is not unusual to be overtaken by cars travelling over 150km/h !
So please be aware and drive defensively.

I drive a lot when in Thailand and out on the highway I like to drive fast. One thing that I always remind myself is that there will always be someone coming faster than me from behind, no matter how fast I'm going. Some Thais drive CRAZY...you have to always remember that...even if you drive crazy yourself! Other than that, and maybe the motorbikes coming from all directions, I rather enjoy it!

I saw a speed trap on the new highway between BKK and Pattaya for the first time about 3 years ago while on holiday. Amazing, they even had a few cars pulled over. One thing I can't get over is that on some freeways motorbikes aren't allowed. I can understand the slow small ones and carts but what about a real bike that can go over 100kph. Something like a mad farang would ride around flat out. That's not going to slow traffic down.
