Thanks for this post. I've been living in Thailand for a year now and I have not really explored it yet. Just one question though...is it safe for a single girl to go out driving on her own across Thailand? I've heard of reports of banditry ins some areas. Are these true?

Thank you for sharing, Richard. This blog is handy and has good tips for backpackers like me.

Usually I don't check the room thoroughly. Luckily nothing has gone wrong so far. The next time, I am going to follow your advice so that I can have a good sleep.

I am looking forward to your next blog.

May I suggest you join this blog's sister site, Paknam Web Forums-link at the top of this page- and ask your question there?
It has several female members who are Thai or have been resident in Thailand for a long time who will be able, I am sure, to answer your question fully.

You are so right about Thai, they do not know(or do not want to) how to read map. I was a lost puppy years ago when I left Thailand and travel on my own in the US. I have to studied map for 2-3 hours before drove to another city. Reading your blog have made me wanted to go back to Thailand and spend some quality time on Thai road trip again. I can't wait for your part 2.

Excellent reading as usual. Keep it up friend with your interesting articles. I wish I could travel like you. However, the job in Abu Dhabi makes it impossible to even think of it.

Hi Richard,
I am travelling to Thailand with my husband and two children and we want to drive from Bkk to Rayong or then to Trat, with hop overs to ko samet / ko chang. Could you advise a route which will be scenic and which will allow us to make regular stops along the way? Which place do you recommend for stay overs? Thank you
