How different is the ride compared to a normal train? I have only taken the usual conventional train. Is the steam train a lot quieter? Does it have any air-con compartments? Are there vendors who sell food and drinks as well?

Darren - There were wooden seats and all the windows were open. I was by the open door so difficult to say if it was noisier. But you would think so.

I posted some pictures of the carriage at ThailandQA.com - click to the second page.

Kunde - you can buy tickets in the advance ticket office at Hua Lamphong Station.

There have been steam train trips on H.M. The Queen's birthday in the past, though from what I understand this has been discontinued. In the advanced ticket office, I was told the next one is October 23rd. However, I will keep an eye on this. I will post any news about steam trains in Thailand at the ThailandQA.com forums. Links is posted above.

Yes, there is. I have already posted the details on the ThailandQA.com Forums. The ticket is 120 baht and you should buy it this weekend. I will go for sure to take pictures but I might not ride it all the way to Ayutthaya.
