You are right about the cold and uncomforatable metal seating in the departure area, Richard. Actually, the whole airport is/was way to cold for me. Next time I will bring along an extra shirt or jacket as well as something to sit on to cushion my backside.

Another very noticeable feeling I got was from the totally gray or silver and concrete color scheme throughout. It is so institutional...not warm or welcoming at all. This does not agree with the warm welcome that usually is found in the Land of Smiles.

I also wonder if the overhead sprinkler system for fire prevention has been completed. Check it out next time. The sprinkler heads are/were there, but the water pipes were non-existent. (This is a totally exposed system, so there were no pipes to be hidden in the concrete.)

As for the pleasant customs officers who were given additional training in polite manners, I guess I didn't get one of those guys to bid me off and invite me to please visit Thailand again. He only grunted at me when I asked him to smile. {Such a rude farang I am.)

I find it a very cold and unemotional place. It would be a nice building for some high tech company, not for the national airport of the land of smiles.
Some more information for the smokers among us. When I last visited the airport in August the duty free shops didn't have any popular American sigarets. Others who have traveled after me told me the same. Maybe some conspiracy againt American tabacco? :)

I've read little in the way of positive feedback about Thailand's new airport, so your sabaai-sabaai observations are refreshing Richard.

Good I will be flying into this airport for the first time next year, with a group of about 15 associates, unfortunately I will not be staying in Bangkok this time, I have wanted to visit Richard and Gor some day, well maybe next time after this trip., as I will be getting a connecting flight with in 2 hours to Phuket. Hope to get a little glimpse of the Airport then, it looks great.

I hated that looooong trek to the departure gates. and the freezing seats. and lining up for 50 mins at immigration. otherwise, very impressive at night!

Hi Richard. I've now been through the airport half a dozen times and I agree it is impressive and easy to negotiate.
Tip for smokers departing. Leave it until the last minute to go through immigration. There are only two tiny smoking rooms and they are miles away down in arrivals.(Some may say serve me right for smoking).
Also a small can of Chang is 25 baht at Family Mart, but 100 baht once through immigration.
Smart restaurant on way to (not yet open)observation lounge but at 350 baht for simple Thai meal or 1200 baht for steak I gave it a miss!
