Dear Miss Somying,
On behalf of the editor, thank you for your support.
Your fluency in your letter has proven our policies were working afterall. Our education has indeed risen to as good as (some say better than) Western standard.
Now I can sleep in peace in my million dollar mansion and live in self-sufficiency with my hundred million savings.
Don't forget to vote for our party again during the next election.
Yours sincerly,
The Governor

Good god almighty -- look at that new profile pic.

The only person not included in that photo who should be is, of course, Mr. Banharn himself. Photoshop him in there and you have Suphan Buri's top celebs all in one shot.

I wonder if Steve will talk to anybody on here once Banharn becomes PM after the next election. I'm guessing he'll change his mobile number.

Cheers,
Noel

PS - Enjoyed the column.

As a matter of fact Noel, since i have only ever written nice kind words about Banharn, i'll be calling him up about getting me a Thai passport or at least a permanent resident visa.
I'm sure he'd be really chuffed that there is a Farang in the same town as him giving his party the big thumbs up.
I'll make sure that on Election Day my wifey ticks that Chart Thai Box. I mean if he can do wonders for Suphan then he can certainly turn this country around.
I forget to mention but Miss Somying is also a huge fan of his.

A declared electoral policy is not a promise, but according to ex-UK Prime Minister Tony Bliar "an aspiration".
Some "aspirations", often those not clearly headlined (or even mentioned)in the manifesto- like increased alowances and expenses for government ministers- are always more likely to become a priority and thus realised far far quicker than others. This is because if you pay ministers more money they will work harder (in between buying more properties, grabbing every available "freebie" or having affairs with their secretaries) as everyone knows.
Of course, it is regrettable that some "aspirations" subsequently prove unworkable without massive tax rises-well-for those without their own accountants, that is,- but hey, no one is perfect-most certainy not the dumb electorate that falls for such spiels from people that normally they would never buy a car from! 555

My latest read is Eric Louw's The Media and Political Process. The publisher's description begins with: "Has the mediaization of politics played any role in encouraging a growing cynicism and disillusionment with political processes in Western democracies?

After reading your article Steve, I'm interested to learn how skeptical you, and other readers of this post, believe the local voters are of these election promises, and to what extent the local media influences their decision-making. It seems more than 50% of the voting population are currently undecided with less than 2 weeks until election day. Or is that another example of the spin-doctors at work?

Another excellent The Nation article.

P.S. Your new profile pic reminds me of the time this newbie glowingly posed at a busy afterhours noodle stand for a snapshot with Jantaburi's 'fake' Ad Carabao. And yes, I did think he was the real deal until I shared the experience with a few longterm locals. Doh!

I used to enjoy thai-blogs because the intelligent writing and varied opinions are great fun to run.

Some of the opinions on politics are also humorous...such as the one quoted above.

The coup was a mistake because it will always make Taksin/Thaksin look like a victim.

The fact that he is coming back, bigger, badder and more "in the shadows" only means that the people should have taken more drastic measures in the first place.

Perhaps have some of Thaksin's secret police fire on some civilians. Then we can get the easily manipulated western media to side with the GOOD GUYS.

Because most westerners can say one phrase "Former democratically elected PM Thaksin"...without a drop of knowledge as to how Thaksin won and will continue to win (under now his puppet team of cronies).

Thaksin's return is not a return to democracy but a re-establishment of the vicious cycle Thailand is cursed with.

A Cash Democracy.

I feel for all the people who stood in the wind, rain and under the hot sun to protest peacefully--their mandate was trampled on by the military and by Thaksin Shinawatra.
