The lottery = a tax on foolishness.

Go to any Asian country like HK/Macau, Malaysia and Singapore and be mesmerized by the array of games of chance. Drive around any Malaysian town after work and you will see throngs and masses of people hopping from one 4 digit lottery outlet to the next competing outlet to bet on the daily lottery. Hang around Happy Valley on a HK race day and you'd puzzle over the connection between gambling and being Asian in general.

Your words ring ever so true Steve! Lottery tax is here where I live in the USA yet my child's science book was published in 1962. "One day we hope we can travel as far as the moon." It says that! So much for lottery tax.

In a few countries where there is no legal minimum drinking age they do not have the rampant problem of teen alcohol abuse, why? Because it is not illegal.

When there is a line drawn, it will always be crossed I think.

Apart from the Sangha, I noticed only those that have protested the return of the Thai lottery were they who were already rich!
In Thailand it gives an income to the disabled, which has to be beneficial.
The Lottery can be a good thing depending on how it is run-it has financed some good things in the UK (but also some undeserving ones!) It has created many millionaires and gives some hope several times a week to people stuck in hum-drum jobs-me included!

It's pretty well known amongst economists that gamblers tend to be from the lower socioeconomic scale. When you've got nothing much to lose, you become less risk adversed at the tables. But then again, many Asians see gambling as an honest form of "investment" and wealth generation as opposed to swindling, theft and other dishonest means - even being aware of the statistics stacking up against them. It'll be difficult to regulate a legalised gambling industry in Thailand without attracting the hordes of hoodlums hungry for a share of the new cake. The other way is to make gambling unaffordable to especially the poor - but then again, this will onl have to go undergrond to gamble. It's a catch-22 situation.

Whats with the queen headband?

Yeah, i've no idea why the guy is wearing that headband, doesn't exactly suit him. Unless you have weird tastes in men.
I spoke to a couple of Thai friends about the idea for this article and they seriously disgreed, believed it would lead to even more gambling, but like Joshua said you make something illegal then folk are more inclined to try it out - especially Thais. 'Gambling is in the Thai genes' as the sub-editor at The Nation entitled this article. Yeah, it all is a bit of a Catch-22 situation.

maybe they should experiment with different approaches and then learn from the experience, figure out how to deal with the problem? maybe legalisation would help. maybe it wouldn't. but cannot really tell without trying.

Were the monks fined or fired? (as in
fired from monkhood).

In regards to the headband, what Steve forgot to mention is he cropped out all the empty bottles of beer. I have never played hi-lo with sober people! Enjoying the game, sometimes I do well, sometimes not at all. But I never bring more than $20USD to the game.

"What a load of nonsense! If any government were honestly serious about such health concerns, then they’d double the prices overnight."

And what do you think will happen? In the US we always up the prices of cigarettes, but it does NOTHING to curb the addiction. Ever. The state I live in just taxed them almost a whole $1 (~33 baht), so they are $4 (~132 baht) per pack. Did they drop in sales? Not one bit.

What are you trying to say Lost Packet? If the price of cigarettes increased in Thailand two-fold then one packet would cost three-quarters of the daily wage. You mean that wouldn't force a lot of smokers cut down. I don't think you know the difference between the cost of living in Thailand and America. $4 for a packet of cigarettes over here is nothing. So stop comparing.

Yea...what is it with you Lost_packet? I just looked through all your comments on our Forums and found that you are extremely anti-American in all ways and that everything in Thailand is so wonderful.

It is quite ironic, in that you are located in The States. I edited your comment above as it wasn't the first time you have told me to pish-off, pack my bags and go back to Britain.

My only advice would be that if you hate everything about America and Thailand is so brilliant, then you ought to pack your bags and come live here.

Cigarettes, alcohol and gambling rolled into one - jackpot!

A quick Google search led me to a sample chapter from Chula educator Pasuk Phongpaichit's 1999 book 'The Gambling Industry'.

She opens with the following statement: "There is a lot of gambling in Thailand. An estimated 70 percent of adults gamble regularly, and the total value added involved is huge - possibly over 200 billion baht a year. With some small exceptions, all of this gambling activity is illegal."

The unbiased research of Ajarn Pasuk and her team makes for dated but interesting reading you, Steve, and thai-blogs.com readers may enjoy.

For what it's worth, I'd bet my life savings against gambling ever being legalised in Thailand by consensus - the population is simply too divided on this sensitive issue.

Reportage Thailand Plug: Place Your Bpets on Three Little Piggies is today's gambling related post.

Yes, gambling should be legal everywhere, and it's time for the government gaming monopolies to end. I enjoy gambling over the Internet.
