Look forward to "Google Earth" updating so we can see the road in all its full glory!

The Rama11 bang yai section usually is slow either check points or repairs, 90 would be max safe ave as it is a very poor concrete road. I live Bangkhae area and we will really benefit going to the airport. Top report what plane / car were you driving?

I would love to take Richard for a run in my Old V8 Holden on this road, make a bit of noise and wake up some of the drivers who are half a sleep, re-live our youth, do some burnout's in front of the chicks, and spend about 5 times more on fuel. 120 kph is quite a good speed, better than the 55 mph in the USA. I suppose the police would not take much notice if you were doing 130 kmh.

If you enjoy road trips Richard, Bangkok - Kanchanaburi is an absolute must! Be sure to stop off at the wild tiger temple on the way; they were working on a tiger island last time we were there.

Here's a link to the English language web site of Wat Pa Luangta Bua Yanasampanno Forest Monastery, Saiyok District, Kanchanaburi, the tiger temple mentioned above:

Thanks Michael, but I have already done an extensive blog on the Tiger Temple and also many other obscure attractions around Kanchanaburi. I have been there many times in the last decade or so. Just do a search here for "kanchanaburi" and you will find many blogs and ideas for tours.

Visiting Kanchanaburi. I recommend "Phu Praya Restaurant" on the way via Tiger Temple (from Kanchaburi, it locates on the right side of the road). Good homemade foods and nice hospitality! And it is safe and clean.

Hi Richard,

Great article about the Outer Ring Rd. I live just off the Bang Pa-In Interchange, so I can tell you a bit more about your "undiscovered country".

If you venture up into the direction of Nakhon Nayok there are some waterfalls te be seen, great for a daytrip or two.

And of course there's Saraburi with its many resorts and Chokchai Farm. This area you can find some of the nicest steak restaurants (have you ever tried Ostrich?).

Lots to see!
Keep up the good work.

Thanks for your blog. I live on Rama II Road (Near Tesco Lotus) and make many trips to the airport (The new one!)

I have been in the UK on holiday for the last three weeks so I must have missed the opening of this section. Does this mean that I can now go from Rama II onto the Outer Ring Road head south over the river and more or less straight to the airport? No Rama 9 Bridge, No bottleneck's Wow, that must be progress.

I used to have to allow 1.30 to the new airport. I wonder what it will be now!

Thanks for posting this article. I wish I had come across it earlier. A few weeks ago I went down to the Yannawa side and took some photographs from the park below.

It really is an amazing structure. The last time I was by the Erawan elephant shrine those ramps were still under construction.
