Are death sentences currently being carried out in Thailand? Or are they all commuted to total life imprisonement sentences?

Yes, executions in Thailand are now carried out by lethal injection. Though there has been any for the last few years.

Excellent blog Richard. Question: Your bit from the guy who had seen 21 taken to their deaths while he himself was on death row was an incredible story in itself. Did this quote come from the book or from your own interviews?

Thanks very much. I look forward to part two.

@ Regular Reader - That quote from death row is not in the book. It is a quote given to me by a prisoner at Bang Kwang. I am in the middle of doing an interview with him at the moment. I wasn't planning on using it here, but it seemed to fit well. I will ask him about the source as he didn't say exactly. Incidently, this same prisoner will also be doing a review of the prison book Escape. He apparently knows people who were in Klong Prem during this event ten years ago. Should be interesting stuff.

An excellent read though I wish this barbaric practise will soon be stopped.

What a graphic and powerful read! It's so hard to imagine being the ill-fated inmate on the black list. I wonder if there were any attempted escapes or mysterious pre-deaths of black listed inmates?

Hi, this is great!

We need a couple of executioners here in South Africa. Rapes and murders are taking place every 3 minutes in our country. The culprits go to jail, escape, rape again, etc. etc. etc.

The death sentence will put a stop to this.

Unfortunately the death penalty is still very much alive and well in Thailand and has been known under a previous and much publicized regime, to be carried out at the time of arrest or shortly after and long before any trial date has been set.
The "sentence" in these case is usually brought down by the senior officer in charge at the time of the arrest and in most cases is carried out by means of a single bullet wound to the head.
Though capital punishment is now carried out in the more humane method of lethal injection in Thailand prisons, I'm still completely adverse to it.
