Nice. For once I feel a bit proud of our country.

It was on the Thai evening news just last week that the police did a huge swoop on Taxi touts.

They had been doing some undercover work and had got some concrete evidence of at least two women who were acting just like those fake TAT guides at Hualumphong train station. Claiming they were working for the authorities they were caught on hidden camera accosting foreigners to taxis of their choice(where they would later claim commission). They were arrested.

I doubt though that the police can charge them with that much.

So, in the meantime anyway, it looks like the vultures will be resting in their nests. This is Thailand however, and after a bit of time and the police have forgotten the incidents - the cheats could be swooping into action....again.

It is certainly a much relaxed atmosphere now. You are not bothered so much and generally you are given honest replies to your questions. However, like the underground lottery, it can become more sinister with the stakes being higher. I walked back through the airport a couple of times and I was approached by a few guys who were clearly nervous. Maybe worried I was working undercover. At least before they wore dark blue blazers and you could easily identify them. Now they are dressed like the general public.

Another think I did notice was the AOT banners advertising their own limo service. Also, there were a few travel agents standing around that were directing people towards the Tour Office desk. They want you to book hotel and transport with them. I asked where the official TAT office was and she said that she was. She lied of course. The TAT office is hidden away at the far end. These tourist offices were very crowded unlike before.

You waited properly in line, agreed to pay the 50 baht surcharge, got onto the taxi, and up on the expressway, only to find the driver turning off the meter and telling you, "Sir, hotel you far. I bring you hotel, 500 baht, ok? I no cheat. 500 baht, ok? No? Ok, you get off taxi now."

In that case you should take out a pen and paper and look at anything that could identify him and, even if you can't write down Thai, pretend you can.

There are easy ways to report these drivers and I think they assume that most passengers are strictly ignorant about them and would never do it. I've yet to have the above happen to me at Suvarnabhumi or Don Muang, so hopefully it's a rare occurence.

Essential you make a note of the number on yellow number plate (if the vehicle does not have a yellow number/registration plate on front, then it is not a licensed taxi) and colour of taxi to make a complaint.
Bucky's example is not unknown-have heard of cases where passengers, having been told the hotel they have a booking is closed/no good being dumped on roadside for refusing to go to the hotel suggested by driver (usually some flea hole in the back of nowhere from which he gets a commission for finding guests)

Yes I remember I Paid about 95 baht from Pattaya to Bangkok in 2002 on a bus. I think this is the best way to go, and prices have not increased much.
