In the last paragraph, America is sounded like a heaven land, not like of those literally stories I have been reading about.

In the fourth paragraph, I do not entirely agree with you that all the western newspapers report correctly. I used to find fault with your most reputable British's newspaper Financial Times, which is supposed to report only the truth.

I think that in some stories the writers just pick up only a scrape of information and stretch it to their wit's end.

Steve, I've just read your excellent piece, "Do not adjust your Net - the bizarre way the world sees Thailand".
As a resident of the kingdom from 1991 until 2000, when a serious motorcycle accident forced my repatriation, and having been happily married to a Thai woman for 20 years,
I am often left gob-smacked at what passes for intelligent and "informed" comment on the nation from outsiders.
There is no need for me to reiterate the litany of woes plaguing western nations which you have alluded to. That some mirroring of these all-too-human problems in Thailand is all that many visitors see
merely indictes the appalling hypocrisy and cultural blindness that grips these miserable souls.
They'd never be content, no matter where their muiserable carcasses ended up. Unable to adapt, they sneer; Unable, or unwillimg, to assist, they gripe and bitch and moan,
all the while helping themselves to the largesse of the Thai people and their society.... and living in a style and fashion they would never enjoy "back home".

I was never guilty of "rose coloured glasses" when it comes to the problems faced by Thailand, but I am no less aware of the problems that beset my, and all other, western nations.
I know where I would rather be.
We western "developed" nations could do a lot worse than emulate some of the more benign aspects of Thai life and culture, starting with respect.
I abhor those farang who disparage Thailand while enjoying its bounty and warmth. Lucky for them I'm not the P.M or they'd find it a little more difficult to bite the hand that feeds them so well.

This doesn't surprise me at all and I've read most of it here or there in the western press. Just recently, I saw a TV report on the topic of prostitutes and human trafficking in Thailand.

Fortunately I've been listening to the western press for a long, long time and have learned to take all of it with a grain of salt.

Last paragraph? Awesome!

The media does what you say. Writer's are probably wearing 2 hat's. Got to please the boss. Anyway, like the biloxie blues quite. People often think that because it's in print, that it is true. Think most people know better. Sensationalism can be spotted pretty easily. Time to turn the page.

"As for that poverty lark, well how do you define poverty?" If you define it as lack of food, shelter, clean water and clothing, then there is very little poverty in Thailand.

How long have you been in Thailand?

Have you ever seen some of the northern villages?

Have you ever bothered to walk round some of the poorer districts of Bangkok?

-try staying with these people for a few nights then say there is hardly any poverty

Hi Steve. Happy to read a blog that puts things in perspective. A foreigner reading about England in the press would conclude that the whole country was full of teenagers shooting each other on a daily basis.
I live in a provincial town oop north and the stories I read in the press bare no relationship to real life.

I have only been to my new wife's hometown of Wichianburi three times, but I have seen enough to know we can live there happily even though it has only one bar! Also I can afford the sort of school for her daughter that would be impossible for a retired copper in England.

My father-in-law is currently looking out for a building plot. Life in Thailand appea
rs to have a lot more positives than negatives even for an old "glass half empty" git like me.

Steve, I enjoyed your comments about Thailand. Like you, My son Lee is "taken" heart and soul by the Thai culture. He works in Afghanistan (private sector) and spends his breaks in Thailand. He may never come home. He has a girlfriend in Wichianburi and loves her and her whole family. He loves the Buddhist "style" of life and wants to eventually reside in your wife's lovely country. He too is blown away by the misconceptions in the media and "thinking" of the West...and particularly the US (his home). He's always been a sweet, thoughtful human being and has always been a live and let live sort of guy. That's not to say he can't..."operate" in any environment anywhere in the world and not just survive...but actually thrive. If you have done 10 yrs there and still love the life...I'm sure my son will in all likelihood follow suite. I guess I'll "miss" him as I'm sure your parents miss you. Actually my girlfriend (a school teacher...science and biology) and I can't wait to visit and "hang out" for a bit ourselves. My son say I should sell everything stateside and move/live out my days there too. He says I can die of old age...not stress (living in the beehive). I guess the apple doesn't fall too far from the tree. Anyway, I enjoyed your take on things Thai. Lovely people and country. Not perfect. Flawed for sure. But good God so is the good ole' USA.
I wish you and your's continued prosperity & happiness...peace out...llc
