Yeah, i'm sure that Wat Pho is gonna be swamped with randy male tourists now after reading this blog.

As for my stance on this - you have to delve deeper into the matter. And personally i disagree that Bangkok's universities strictly enforce any dress regulations!

"Author's notes: After a thorough investigation, it was found out that the girls were in fact 'real students' just wanting to practice their English, and not.... out to score 2,000 baht for a quick session with the 'black guys' at a nearby short-time motel."
*LOL* Is that the rate nowadays?!

Yeah me too. Just look at Japan.... they've the kinkiest uniforms but don't see them having any major social problems. :p

I can't help but notice how the fact that the tourists were black was repeated. I wonder if they would have reacted so outraged if the tourists were white? If this is how racist Thais are I'd go spend my "black" and "colored" money elsewhere

Comment from: Richard Barrow Email · http://www.richardbarrow.com
I don't think Thais are really that racist. However, they do like to label things and will often repeat small details of a story in an article. This doesn't always come out so well in translations.

At first I did notice like Tess the fact that the skin color of the tourist was mentioned a lot, but then i jsut decided to looked at teh funny side of the story, although dressing provocatively is not so nice or popular the tsiry still funny , like the fact that she poses with the girls.

By no means would I ever want government to butt in with my life. However, in this case, when the students wear school uniform then they were representing their school and that means you are to abide by school policy.

What is the use of stopping them....culture is the matter of attitude....problem here is your old fashion attitude...you will someday found this crazy immoral staffs overwhelming and you will found yourself an idiot!!!

I totally agree that they have their freedom to wear whatever they want. But not such a flashing skin "uniform" in the temple.

@Gao
Your attitude is just so...

My wishes: I wish

1. the girl had dressed more properly in the wat.
2. Khun ying hadnt doubted the girl as being a prostitute
3. the skin of the tourist hadnt been mentioned...the news made me feel that the matter was worsened because the toursit was black
4. the media hadnt quickly judged the girl moral standard...and hadnt given all right to any authority to judge anybody's value
or behavior

The ministry was tipped off by a tour group of Thai tourists??? Do these people not have anything better to do with their time??? I think the people involved should be ashamed of the way they have behaved (and I don't mean the girls or the tourists they were talking to)
2007-03-05 @ 17:51
Perhaps most of the comments were meant to be tongue in cheek.

The bothersome part of the story is that these girls don't know any better than to dress and behave like that at a temple. They have plenty of places to be fashionable and dress sexily. They just have no dignity to do it at a temple.

Comment from: Just a thought
From a Thai perspective, the girl has the right to wear anything that she wants. BUT she happens to be in the temple compound. Not only Wat Po is a temple, but also a royal temple for King Rama I.

We, Thai, already know that if we are to go to a temple, we should dress properly. So that we do not provoke the monks to think of worldly matter. Also, it'd in a way reflect self-respect of the person, esp. Thai girl.

Comment from: Tom Smith Email
Every Thai knows how not to dress when visiting the Wat "Buddhist Temple".
The problem is the Monks themselves lead the Thai to misbehaving by their own example. Drug dealing, rape, scam and womanizing are just a few examples the Thai Monks give the Thai public.
It is common practice to scam and cheat tourists at some of the more known Wats in Bangkok. Charging admission to foreign tourists for visiting the Wat sets the tone for more of the same. Most every Thai knows it is against the Buddha teaching to charge admission to Wat but the greedy Monks and Government officials don't see it that way. But how would you like it if when you visit your place of worship they asked 250 baht at the gate? Some white and black are Buddhist too!

I noticed that the fact they were sitting with a black tourist. what's that about? are Tahis that racist? what a backyard country. they should be more concerned with their 'ladyboys" and their over zeolous GAY culture.

****-
My understanding of Thai culture is that temples should be respected and this type of behavior should be reserved for other places. The fact that the Thai Women where talking with a black tourist has nothing to do with anything. I think whoever wrote that story had a dislike for blacks.

Comment from: b
first off, most blacks in Thailand, or anywhere for that matter are criminals, drug dealers, and thieves. Even in Japan where I saw a total of 3 blacks, they were all offering me (unsolicited) drugs and hookers. You people are retarded sticking up for them, you just have no balls to stand up to them - them and all the other "stereotyped" groups, from AIDS spreading child molesting homosexuals, to dirty old white men coming to Asia to abuse hookers - and the goddamn hookers themselves! You simply haven't the courage to do anything about it, so you just accept it - and you wonder why society is falling apart. Its great to make fun of Thailand and how they try to maintain a shred of tradition - but whatever backwards country you come from, try fixing your own problems before pointing the finger. And sorry I seem "biased" towards blacks, its not my fault they try to carry off everything thats not bolted down. I've had the wonderful pleasure of living amongst them for years, working not with them but more like "around them" - they are a total pain in the ass, their brains seem to stop growing at the age of 10, and they are prone to violence and extremely unstable mentally. To be fair, there are decent people that so happen to have black skin, and they deserve to be treated with respect and friendship no matter how many others have wronged you. Common sense - people; if a stereotype exists there probably is a statistical reality behind it that needs to be addressed - and you still need to balance it humanity towards decent people who don't fit the stereotype. But I can tell you those girls in that picture need a smack in the mouth. I see their type all the time. They most likely are students but that doesn't exclude the very real possibility that they are also hookers. Either way, they back talked an elder - in Thailand that's unacceptable and everyone knows it, so they are slag, and the monkey with them is mostly likely just another piece of shit that thinks this country is his own personal playground.

by the way, I could care less if anyone disagrees with me, you touchy-feely people have been getting your way since the 60's and it shows. Your unrealistic approach to problem solving is proven to be a failure. Meanwhile, people just become more efeminite, used to comfort, and unwilling to fight against the true, great injustices of our time. If you think I'm wrong about blacks, go spend a month in a project - a stinking, feces covered, crack dealer infested project police won't even go near - and report back to me - better yet walk down a corridor of a an American prison, 60% of which will be filled with blacks, despite their 12% representation in the normal 'free' population. I guess it must be all them southern cops still calling them "boy" and tossing them in jail for talking with a white girl. lol!

Hey B, you wouldn't have self-published a book recently would you?

Let me guess, you left America because things got too "liberal" for you. The minorities were taking over and you felt like you just didn't fit in. Your side was losing or being diminished and you just couldn't stand the injustice of it anymore. So you came to Thailand where a woman will wash your feet for you and clip your toenails. You feel like a man again.

Looking back on your time in America, you feel that your new perspective makes it all too clear just how screwed up things got back there. What's more, there's no worry about anyone here thinking your a kook or a mouth-frothing bigot, because nobody here understands what the hell you're saying, and are likely to nod in agreement even when they do just so that you don't lose face.

Your chest has swelled and you're ready to shout your views from the rooftops.

Only here we're not as far detached from reality as you are. Here we still respect people and wouldn't use a word like monkeys to describe a race of them. Here we recognize that black people in Thailand don't deserve an idiot like you coming online and labeling them all drug dealers because you're an expert on such matters since three blacks once tried to sell you drugs in Japan some time ago.

Your ignorance is galling and when people say that society is moving forward, they mean that is moving past people like you. Keep your views for the woman clipping your toenails. She's probably used to them by now.
