Wow, those birds are really beautiful and we love the great pics you took of them. The picture of the woman with neck rings in the top right corner is very interesting and a little freaky as well. Loved this post so much we made a link to it in our blog at www.gosmelltheflowers.com/blog

We visited this temple in December (we got a songthaew from the town). The locals had told us that in the past there used to be many more birds, but in recent years the numbers had dwindled due to loss of land etc.

So we were very surprised when we arrived to find that there were thousands and thousands of birds. It was quite an eerie noise, with all the clacking and honking and rustling going on. Apparently it is because some of the birds used to nest near Suvarnabhumi, but now the airport is open they have been driven out.

It was quite an experience to see them all, but I hope there are enough trees to support such a large number.

An interesting post and some nice photos. I have visited here on a couple of occasions, (several years ago now), taking a couple of buses from Ayutthaya, (a challenge, and a bit of a hassle getting back to town, but well worth it for the experience).
I have a couple of photo's up on my site: http://www.stickyrice.co.uk/photolist.php?Id=94&LargeLoc=..%2Fimages%2Flarge%2F165.jpg&town=Amphoe+Sam+Khok%2C+Pathum+Thani&country=Thailand&title=Open-billed+Storks%2C+Wat+Phailom&CountryId=1#large
if anyone cares to take a look, (I hope that url doesn't get cut!)
