The one and only time I went to Mae Sai in 1996, the border was closed and the trip was only memorable for a good dish of chicken with cashew nuts in an upstairs restaurant on the main drag, watching cartons of cigarettes being openly smuggled from Burma to Thailand by being thrown across the river, avoiding cigarette salesmen -some of whom were selling cartons that later turned out to be stuffed with paper reather than ciggies, and being perpetually pestered by a gang of child beggars.
Doi Tung was a better experience-though the Chalet was closed to visitors at that time-some compensation of a sort was had a week or so later in Bangkok, witnessing the dress-rehearsal of the parade for the Late Queen Mothers funeral one overcast Sunday morning while visiting Wat Bo.
Really must visit Mae Sai and Doi tung again -thanks for the travel tips, Steve.

I read this post via the twitter feed. It was interesting to see both sides of the what will be an ongoing story.
