It appears that nothing is right if Taksin initiates anything including the opening of the new airport. Without Taksin Thailand will be behind Myanmar in just 10 years. We have to stop the "old politics" and move forward. The Democrats and Khun Baharn's clan deliberately have kept the Thais as slaves to their own tricks. Let the airport open and give the credit to Taksin. He deserves all the respect of Thais.

Probably the opening date is also very much geared to the start of the main tourist season in October.

Richard,
Great site, keeps me from missing Thailand too much!

Did I read correctly that the arrival lounge is 10 minutes away by shuttle bus? Is that where we will meet family?
Thanks,
Mike

No, you misunderstood. I started my tour at the bus terminal. I said the arrival lounge was ten minutes away. So, after you have landed at the new airport (and passed through immigration and collected your luggage), you have to catch a 10 minute bus shuttle to reach the bus terminal.

Silly question but is this suppose to replace Don Muang or is it like a relief airport?

@ Oliver

There are no silly questions. This new airport will replace Don Muang.

What will happen to Don Muang then ? For military use ?

By the way, will the airport tax still be the same for this new airport ? Or there will be more ?

Many of the details are not known yet despite the fact itis supposed to open within 30 days. There has been a lot of speculation about what will happen tot he old airport but no-one seems to know for sure.

Don Muang will be used for cargo and some charter flights.

The airport tax at Suvarnabhumi will be raised from 500 baht to 700 baht. Aircraft landing fees are also being raised by significant amounts, so expect your airfares to go up as well.

The THAI Airways union is protesting the Sept 15 opening for domestic flights, so we'll see if that really happens. It would be dreadfully inconvenient if it does. Overseas visitors flying to Thai destinations other than Bangkok (say, Phuket or Chiang Mai), will have to arrive at Don Muang, then transfer by shuttle to Suvarnabhumi to meet their connecting flight.

Personally, I would postpone any travel plans until at least November...

By that time, the new airport would be open and you will no longer have any reason to go to the old one at Don Muang.

Gonna be in Bangkok in Oct! Anyone has any ideas how to get to Rayong from the new airport? Hopefully via A/C coaches like the kind at the Bus Terminal (with the same kinda price).

No way you are gonna be able to get a bus from the new airport to Rayong.

In fact, how it is looking - you won't even be able to get a taxi from the airport!

The government has planned that all passengers arriving at the airport either; take a bus, a limousine, walk or wait 3 years for the train!

They have now changed their mind about the taxis. You can now go down to the first floor to catch a taxi. However, they reckon the surcharge will go up from 50 baht to 100 baht! Yes, you have to pay 100 baht just to catch a taxi! Welcome to Thailand.

Departure tax will also go up soon from 500 baht to 700 baht.

The bus terminal is about 10 minutes away by shuttle bus. There are quite a few routes as well as specials to tourist areas. Normal buses will cost no more than 35 baht. Not sure about specials. There is talk that some of the long distance buses will stop here. Obviosuly good if they do.

For people who don't want to go to Bangkok and just want to go straight to Pattaya or Rayong, then the new airport is actually a lot better located. It is very close to the motorway which will take you that direction. It will be a lot quicker than the old airport. They are expecting a surge in tourism and expats living in Pattaya.

I will be doing a blog about this soon. I will also go to the airport in early October to see for myself.

I didn't mention in my blog one incident that I didn't really pay much attention to at the time. It involved the big rotating doors at the front entrance. When we were leaving, too many people tried to pass through and the door came to a halt trapping everyone inside. A few weeks later I read of another incident like this in the newspaper. Apparently Thai people have never used rotating doors before. Actually, I don't think I have seen one this large myself. Anyway, what is even funnier, today some of the generals went to inspect the new airport. This will open in just two days. Guess what happened. They got stuck in the revolving door and had to be rescued!!

I just wrote a blog on public transport at the new airport. Click here.

You should fit three people in a taxi with no problem. As long as your bags can fit in the trunk.I am not sure yet, but the meter should be about 200-300 baht depending on the traffic and your destination. There is also a 50 baht surcharge and you might have to pay for tollway.

The Airport City link would be 150 baht per person. No surcharge and no tollway fees.

The domestic is at the same airport. Just walk to the other end of the building. For sure, DON'T stay at a hotel at Don Muang!!! Your flight won't be landing or leaving there any more.

I've always stayed at the Amari at Don Muang and loved it. As usual, I'll be in transit and have read that the Novotel is terrible. Where exactly is the new airport and are there any hotels near it? Or should I just sit up all night after arriving at midnight?
Merci
