I'd like to know whether, in theory, if a cooking school ought to be under the Min of Education. My guess is that 'yes' they should be (if 7 or more students are enrolled)

If not, then what kind of guarantee can these schools possess to confirm quality of curriculum/teaching? Pls ask.

Great to see how Richard manages to find time off school! Envious.......

Richard (and nefarious crew),

I know you probably get tired of me reposting your blogs on my blog, but if you quit putting up such great stuff, I would quit doing it. But you have, once again, put up a great post about your cooking school experience in Chiang Mai. And I thank you.

And Steve in Suphanburi, you are just getting better and better.........if that is possible. Wonderful stuff.

And Superman from the old days in Phuket. Long may your freak flag ride. Mine still waves, to some extent.

I always try to credit you guys, but if I miss some credits on stories or photos, do let me know.

Blogs are links, and links are blogs.

I have done three days cooking at "A Lot of Thai" cooking classes and I can thourghly recommend it. The classes are run by Yui and she is excellent.

Yui and Kwan her husband own and run the classes. Yui is the teacher and Kwan does the picking up and dropping off and looks after bookings etc. They run the classes from Kwan's parents home and it is very comfortable. Maximum of 8 in the class and whilst I was there there was a class of 5, then just me and finally 2. I was blown away by the fact Yui ran the class with just me!

The quality of the class lesson was fantastic, Yui's english is excellent and continually explained the processes any subsitutes of ingredience etc throughout.

I would recommend to anyone going to CM for cooking to give A Lot of Thai a go.....say hello to Yui, Kwan and Sid (their young son) for me! (-:

Do you know the English translation for the word Sompet? My friend was born in Thailand and named for the marketplace

The Sompet Thai Cookery School is taught by the owner. We've taken 3 or 4 courses there and have really enjoyed the instruction as well as the food. Our friends really liked going there too. Just fyi if you are ever in Chiang Mai again.

Thank you for your report.

@Foo: I'm very happy to hear that they still exist. I took a course there back in 1998 but failed to find their office (which used to be at the Thae Phae Gate) when I visited Chiang Mai this summer.

Next time I go back I'll take another course or two there. Extremely nice place with an excellent setup.

@Hawk: They moved to the night bazaar area, but it looks like they are moving again. Attached is a web site for them so you can either phone them or email them next time you are there.

I liked all the courses I took - Thai Central, Northern Thai and the Chef's one. The chef's one was a lot of work though - we made a lot of curry pastes... I will make my own paste now if I can get the ingredients since I am not so intimidated after taking these courses.

@Foo: Thanks for the link. I'll definitely do some courses there next time around.
I think I must've done the Chef's course last time because I remember at least three different curry pastes (red, black and green :-)

@Hawk: Sorry, just heard today that Sompet Cookery School is going through some re-development and classes are outside Chiang Mai for now.

@Foo: Well, I'd expect them to be outside Chiang Mai - that's where they were back in 1998 and that was a very nice setup!
