Nice one, as ever, Steve.
Zebra crossings: As a Thai friend informed me:
"We have no Zebras on the streets in Thailand, so we just ignore them" I guess the same goes for the few Pelican crossings that I have seen that are routinely ignored by moped riders.

I never had any problems with all those stray dogs, never had any chase my bicycle or bite my ankles while riding in Samut Prakan, I must have had authority over them.

Great stuff. I'm enjoying the "Steve Suphan's Insider's outside look at Bangkok" series very much.

"I wouldn't advise any newbie to Bangkok to ride a bicycle. Just ride it into any old lane and half the soi's stray dog population will be running behind in a frenzy trying to bite your ankles and pull you off the darned thing."

You paint a funny picture. I hadn't realised that soi dogs took such a passionate dislike towards your Bangkokian cyclist. Forewarned is forearmed, although i hadn't considered getting a bike here due to the unpredictable out-of-nowhere style driving of some area motorbike taxis.

I guess the dogs in Samut Prakan must have kinder dispositions!

Cheers
BKK

Well if the Governator of California could crash his bike without having a license, our PM and his cronies can surely get away with riding around with no helmet on.

Then again, some people would argue that the PM should have the helmet on at all time. ;-)

Last time I was home, we rode a Tuk Tuk from the Oriental to our house in Lang Suan. Holy cow! I haven't realized how scary a Tuk Tuk could be! Never fear the ride, not even with 9 other friends, when I was growing up. Suddenly, by the time we sped down Wireless Road, my whole life started to flash before my eyes.

Brandon told me he wouldn't get into one of these again even if that's the only way we could run from a rampaging Godzilla. Heheeh.

Thais should keep a copy of this photo and when they are stopped by Police wihtout wearing helmet while ridding a motorbike, they could produce this photo and tell the police that they are just following the leadership example. :0)

In reply to a comment or so...it is advisable, if stopped by 'Thailand's finest' for not wearing a helmet, to wear a right trendy pair of shades! (see above photo..again..)

As for Paul_au, and his bit about...'I must have had authority', well.... i'm not quite sure what he is going on about but - perhaps he had a 7 foot-stick or a catapult!

Thanks

Just read Steve's letter in the Nation about Thaksin trip to Roi Et. That was priceless ;) hehehe! You are the MAN.

Is it just me or does that photo of Thaksin riding a moped sans helmet remind anyone of the poster for Marlon Brando's 1950's film "The Wild Ones" ?

Good tale of the streets, klongs and rivers of scenic Krung Thep.

A place where the horn is indeed mighter than those foolishy s-l-o-w-e-r than the flow of traffic! ANY traffic.

Our first visit to the Kingdom we learned quickly that unless you can sprint like an Olympian, your chances of ever crossing Rama IV are nil...

We waited for almost 30minutes, shooing away the many tuk tuks that offered to take us "across the street", we finally hired one, it was a BARGAIN!

As for the dogs, they seem to have an inbred instinct on how to quickly, find, follow and attack ANY one slower than they are!

WELL DONE Steve!

I often ask my Thai wife why they bother wasting all that white paint to make a zebra crossing... if the traffic is heavy , she will take a motorcycle taxi just to cross the road !......
2006-02-05 @ 12:47
LOL scoobyofsuphan, but one thing i can say is the traffic will one day eventually fade away, with improvements already on the way to the BTS and Is riding a bike as safe as crossing the road?
