Hilarious. I think you have painted the definitive picture of the female bus conductress.

Almost scary how many of your bus rules I have instinctively adopted, particularly the one about feigning sleep if you see kids getting on the bus! Never thought of the rear-end jostling to get someone out of a seat. Will keep that in mind.

Also when travelling on the bus with a female as a male it is adviseable to sit by the window, that way in the unfortunate circumstance that an oldie or a kiddie get on the bus you are less obligated to get up from your seat than you would have been at the aisle.

About six months ago or so when stuck for a ride back from work which is a bit outside of Bangkok, I stupidly hopped on to a packed green bus, standing on the bottom step at the door. Was on a highway and the bus was going at such a speed that I white-knuckled it and honestly feared for my life. Would never do that again. There are enough stories of injury and more due to dangerous bus antics here.

Good one Steve. If this is a series, then I look forward to part 2.

Absolutely hilarious, Steve -it has put me off Bangkok buses for life -not that I have ever been brave enough to use one !

it's funny indeed, but I don't think it is so bad on the whole. it's lots of fun. the people, the music the driver plays on the radio. I just need to mind my ankles when getting on and off, because they don't actually stop, just slow down. and also not to forget to carry a pullover when taking a longer aircon trip.
maybe I've just been lucky, I don't know. I have never owned a car and have always relied on public transport.

*LOL* Funny stuff!
As a driver myself, I really hate these bus drivers... Ah, whats the use of the bus lane when the busses don't keep to the lanes? Instead zooming from left to right and then back from right to left like a lunatic... stopping and letting passengers alight in the middle lane???
If u ask me... the busses are one of the main contributors for traffic jam in Bangkok...... oh ya, and the taxi too......

I had to dash to catch a bus just a couple of nights ago. It was one heck of an experience.....but I love it. :)

How does one get off a bus? I have seen buzzers located near the entrance/exit points but not elsewhere. Hmmm....

To sum it up, taking a bus ride can be fun experience. It adds another dimension to life in Thailand. You meet people from all walks of life such as the salarymen, office ladies, students, kids, the elderly folks...

If you want to get down to real authentic Thai life, catch a bus. ^^

Sure, taking a bus in Bangkok is a great way to get a real feel of Thai Ways! and an introduction to Thai music and especially northeastern style! - most of the drivers are from that region of Thailand.

In fact, i wrote about the hazards of getting off one too, but edited out after i thought the blog was long enough already. Would prefer to keep me blogs just that little bit shorter this year!

As mentioned above, riding a BKK Bus non-air-con bus is NOT the safest of experiences and passengers have been killed as a result of falling out of one, and im not joking! Then, there are accidents every year where buses have crashed because of racing against fellow drivers in the bid to make the most commission!

Once, a long time back i fell off a bus on Asoke (Sukhimvit 21) but very fortunately i was left uninjured!

Thanks for the positive comments and glad yous enjoyed the read!

Liked the bus blog.
We've done taxis with no shock absorbers at 150 kph on the tollway, tuk tuks in the traffic and the sky train above the traffic.
Buses next trip!

Your blog brought up many memories, Steve! :-) I remember, used to take these buses from Bangkok to Paknam where I used to live. My greatest challenge was decyphering the destination sign before the boarding frenzy started.

Although I second Betti's opinion - didn't really feel much of an adventure. Got jaded, I guess.

One advice that wasn't mentioned here: folks, if you are lucky to get a place near the driver, you may extend your Thai vocab with words not found in any dic! ;-)

Great blog, Steve, and don't worry about being too wordy. Your name guarantees full read by just about everyone here, regardless of lenght. :-)
