Keeping a National culture alive and healthy is important. I feel it diminishing in America. Sad but true.
Another reason for me to retire to Thailand.

it's interesting to see how it works when the kids grow up a little :-) I've only been at my kindergarten for a week and a half, but now I see how they get there: the three-year-olds do get full wais from the teachers and their parents because they learn by imitating the moves. later they learn to wai before they take something from the teacher and say thank you. many of them are half Thai and apparently their parents are not so much into traditions, so it's the school's job to teach manners.
on the whole, I often feel uncomfortable with the wais (and other courtesy) myself. I'm an outsider, not clearly established in the system (I'm older than all my colleagues, and more experienced, but still a farang and a newcomer, so it's messy), and I feel I rather run the risk of overdoing than underdoing anything related to manners. for example, I do thank the cook lady for the meal, my Thai colleagues just take it. simple things like that.
