Some of the stories are more bizarre than those I read in newspapers here in Malaysia. Reading these stories certaining makes one more street-wise and less gullible. Thanks.

The more stories I hear or read about Thailand, the more similiarities I see between Indonesian and Thai people.

Amazing how similar this stories are to that at my place. The ones which are almost ditto are:

1. The not-paying dowry trick
2. Two marriages.
3. And the very recently occured Miss beauty queen who turned out married (but said that she is not registered) ...

LOL!

LOL, Steve. Only 2 wives? Some guy here in the UK was discovered last week to have married THREE ! This situation only came to light when he went into hospital for an operation and he messed up on the visiting times for each of his "wives" !

I'm just wondering about this situation with the wives, whether there is any similarity between Thailand and Taiwan here. in Taiwan many men have one wife officially, but they keep a second one. not in secret, of course, it's absolutely normal, these relationships often go on for years, there are common children, a second family home, and the wives take turns! often the two families sometimes even celebrate Chinese new year or birthdays together. any of this happening in Thailand, maybe?

Oooh...gotta forward the getting out of dowry tip to my parents as they are now preparing to pay up for my older brother. Heh. :)

BTW - On that note, I won't be able to make it to Thailand in February to my brother's wedding as planned. I used up all of my vacation days this July and I won't have enough to make it worthwhile to come home. Will have to see you fine Thai-Blogs folks next November instead it seems.

Funny as always, Steve. :)

Have you thought of collecting and publishing this stuff in a book? Just look at the "Hardship Posting" series, it seems to be on the shelves of every Farang bookshop over here, and it's not even half as funny as this.

I won't be able to make it to Thailand in February

Sorry to hear that, Oakley. I just hope that your summer vacation was great, to be worth it. :)

See you in November, then.

Szia Betti,
I didn't know that the situation is same in Taiwan too, although it's not surprising. It was common practice in Thailand not too long ago. Men could freely have as many mistresses as their desire - and wallet - allowed. Beautiful daughters were used as bargain chips, in exchange for favors from influental men. In fact, many Thai politicians have several 'mia noi' up to this day. I wonder.. is it the same in Taiwan too?

Thanks all for the comments.

Well, if a girl wants to marry into money then she is probably gonna have to put up with her hubbie taking on a mistress or two. Pretty standard practice.
If, on the other hand the guy is wanting to take on another girlie when in fact he just doesnt have the financial sources then the wifey is probably not gonna be too darned pleased.

Although it has to be said that the tides are turning and a lotta women these days are not willing to tolerate their 'supposed' loved one doodling around with some other young girlie.

Very much depends on the wife.

Again, glad you enjoyed the read.

Steve, you should be publishing some of these blog stories of yours over on thailandsories.com where many other authors of stories like this are showcasing their talents and gaining readers and a following. Plus you can make some money off your writings there.

Steve already has a large and faithful following. These blogs get 5,000 readers a day. Steve also gets paid to write a regular column for The Nation which has a slightly larger readership. Incidently, he also has his own website of his wonderful stories. Look out for the book coming out later this year!

Great Thailand stories. I've heard some from my wife and family, but hadn't heard about the 'lottery' winner. The Thais can be so trusting at times it seems they will fall for many a scam. I have to warn the wife to be a bit less trusting. Thanks. Good blog Steve.
