Wow,

I'm surprised too just how deep this 'double standard' goes with Thai pricing. I've know about the 'two tier' system for awhile. All my Thai friends here are really embarrased and get angry about it. They see it as being dishonest though dishonesty is something I know goes very much against the nature of the majority of Thai people.

You make a good point however on times when it is understandable if not 100% ok to do this or pay the extra jacked up cost. You also write an excellent response on how things like this can be handled where no one loses face. Plus, like you said in so many words, the choice to buy is always with the consumer, NOT the seller!

In any case these are some great tips on what to watch out for when I am Thailand and the best way to handle it if I come across the same situation. Thanks for an excellent post!

Hi Richard,

This is indeed an extremely common practice and can add an unnecessary nuisance to travelling and living in Thailand. The secondary menu thing is so blatantly devious that it is especially irksome.

I agree with Wit - Richard you provide some good suggestions for how to deal with these situations in the right away. The best thing you can do is to refuse these places your custom - not to get angry and not to become paranoid and think that everyone is out to eke one more baht out of your wallet!

Now I read ("The Nation")THAI airways, with the blessings of TAT, have raised the airfare from Chiang Mai to Mai Hong Son - for tourists only, of course.
