Richard, thanks for the excellent article.
At the funeral of my sister-in-law in August 2011, which was held in what I understand to be an 'important' wat in Bangkok, the ceremony only lasted 3 evenings with the cremation on the 4th morning. There was discussion within family as to whether to have a longer ceremony to allow more time for family & friends to pay their respects but final decision was that 3 days was enough.
The first evening was the bathing rite followed by chanting, the next 2 nights were chanting, and the cremation on the 4th day. Each of the chanting evenings went for 1 hour, with a 10 to 12 minute break in the middle when the monks had a drink and family and guests were served very nice light meals and cold drinks. The flowers and wreaths from family, friends and work associates of the sister-in-law were quite magnificent and there were a huge number of them. I thought the funeral ceremony was very well organised, very moving at times, and there was also lots of happy greetings and talk between family and friends when they arrived and particularly before they went home.

Have been there last year.
That is so amazing what they produce out there. It is just ... wow ... . I am always so impressed about how much Energy people in Asia invest in things which they will sarcify later on. Have seen three meter high paper-constructions, think it took them weeks for making them - just lid up in fire.
Cool Blog by the way,
see ya in thailand, marie

Hi,

I like to share my experience with you for getting a tourist visa for the USA for my Thai spouse. I thought it was more or less the same as for a Schengen visa, which we applied already for 3 times sucessfully and without any problems. For the US you have first to pay US$ 20 for a pin. With this pin you have to make an appointment for an interview at the embassy. That you have to do through their website, but the website doesnot show any available dates, we only managed to do that after 50 times!! Than you have to pay US$ 140 at a postoffice for the appointment. Today my wife had that interview. The guy (american) asked her why she married an older guy. Before she could gave a reply, he said, because of the money. Than he asked her why she wanted to vist his country. She told for a holiday, together with her husband to visit her sister, who is married with an American guy and lives in Hawai. He told her, I deny you visa, because you married an older guy, wait for his money when he dies and than you will go to live with you sister in Hawai!!!
What a difference with our experiences with the embassy of the Netherlands, in Bangkok. There they are polite, not discriminating, helpfull, understandable, pleasant and I could wait inside when my wife had the interviews istead of waiting on Wireless road outsite. I warn everybody who is living together with a Thai spouse, or married not to spend money on trying a simple tourist visa for the USA.
