Motto for Children’s Day 2009

Since 1955, Thailand has been celebrating Children’s Day every year. At first, it was held on the first Monday of October every year. But later, it was decided that it should be on the second Saturday of January as this was not only a holiday but also it was the dry season. This made it easier for local organizations to put on shows and events for the children. Many places like zoos and amusement parks allow children to go in for free on this day. The Children’s Day this year is on 10th January 2009.

Every year, H.M. The King gives advice to the children. Here is some advice he has given in the past:

“Every person has a duty to perform. Although you are still young, you have duty as young person, that is to study. This means that you children have to study to gain knowledge and to have skills in various work. You have to form yourselves to be sensitive, gentle and tender in your behaviour, thoughts and minds. You children have to be honest, happy, sensible and wise, so that you will grow up as capable and knowledgeable persons for the benefit of our nation.”

At the same time, the prime minister sets a motto or slogan to help guide the children. Here are some examples from the past:

“Unity, discipline, be eager to learn and promote virtue.”
“Have virtue in your heart, practice sufficiency economy and avoid vice.”
“To be smart, you must be diligent in reading and thinking.”

The Children’s Day 2009 motto has already been set by PM Abhisit Vejjajiva. He told everyone that children are the future of Thailand and so therefore it is essential that society pays attention to their schooling and development. Here is the slogan:

“Think smart, think pure thoughts, inspire dreams and promote unity”.
