Queen’s Birthday in Thailand

H.M. Queen Sirikit of Thailand, Somdet Phra Nang Chao Sirikit Phra Borommarachininat, was born on August 12th, 1932. While she was studying in Switzerland, she me the future King Bhumibol Adulyadej. Around that time, he was badly injured in a car accident and Queen Sirikit was a frequent visitor at the hospital. They became engaged in July 1949 and were married the following year. H.M. Queen Sirikit is well known for her charity work around the Kingdom. In particular, she is president of the Thai Red Cross.

Today we celebrate the birthday of H.M. Queen Sirikit with a public holiday. As many people regard her as a mother to all Thai people, today is also celebrated as National Mother’s Day in Thailand. All over the country, people will be presenting their mothers with jasmine garlands. There will also be many activities arranged to pay respects to H.M. Queen Sirikit.
