A great new bar appeared on Soi Bang La[BarRoad]this week, the Kangaroo Bar!
Run by the likeble Andrew, the Kangaroo was the prime spot on BarRoad, next to the little Valentine store.
The Kangaroo Bar was always good for a laugh in those days, one morning I drove by to see 5 guys sitting on beach chairs with numbered signed[1-10]in which they’d vote on the “shela’s” walking by! They draw a small crowd and many were the laughs that day at the ole Kangaroo Bar!
At the beach end of BarRoad, across from Ladas Bar, was the infamous Disco…this round shaped thatched roofed over-side beach palapa was always going strong playing very LOUD and very bad disco music to the throngs of katoys, northern europeans, and locals that just loved the Disco. I NEVER went to the disco, being entrenched in “oldies” rock n roll or Led Zepelin, the Disco just wasn’t my cup of tea…then or now…
Trouble always seemed to roll around the Disco, fights were often and kept the small Thai Police force[maybe 4 guys]constantly busy, usually on small matters of who did or didn’t either “pay now” or “buy the beer”…
Most of the expats stayed away from the Disco, it was just a waste of time and was the original overpriced bar on Patong Beach!
On the other end of the spectrum, Scandia Bungalow was an ideal of charm and kindness. Big Pappa who owned the place and Big Momma who ran the place always had a big crowd of those funny folks that spoke with the melodious voices as they drank ALL the Kloster, Singha and Mekhong in the place. There was NEVER trouble at Scandia, a few falling down embibers, but mostly good natured fun. They even had a weekly Monopoly tournament there! Scandia was always a good bet to pass the afternoon/evening, listening to the Swedes ramble on about how cold the winter was, etc.
On poor guy, known locally as Mr Mekhong, was about 7′ tall! This guy always had two little Thai beautys guiding him from bungalow to bar, he was a nice guy, had a big heart, but when he fell, it was like a giant redwood hit the beach! It shook several meters around…
too be continued…
